THAMES DEEP LEVELS. MEETING OF BOARD. (By Telegraph.—Special Corresnondent.l Auskland, April 12. There would at last seem to be a reason- ' ablo probability of tho Thames deep levels scheme coming to early fruition. At a meeting of tho Thamc3 Deep Levels Mining Board, this morning, the chairman (Mr. E. H. Taylor, M.P.), presided, and. others present were:—Messrs.- Albert Bruce (Government nominee), C. Hudson (Waiotahi Gold Mining Company), H. H. Adam 6, 'May Queen Gold Mining Company), John Kneebone (Saxon Gold Mining Company), Graves 'Aickin (Victoria Gold Mining Company), H. Gilfillau, j'uu. (Kuranui. Caledonian . Company), and J. B. Sheath (secretary to the board). . The secretary announced that tho Knra-nui-Caledoniaii, the May .Queen, -the Waiotahi, and the Victoria Companies had all paid in their contributions of £2400. each. The fifth company concerned, the Saxon, had paid in. cash tho sum of £847, arid for the balance of. the contribution duo it had handed to the board three fixed deposit notes (which .materialise on August- 19 next) for £517 10s. each. This was equivalent to a payment of £1552 10s., in addition to the cash payment of £847. The total amount in the bank to the credit of tho board was £10,447 10s. Some discussion followed the proposal to accept tho Saxon Company's fixed deposit notes, instead of cash. It was finally agreed to accept these, and it was resolved that' tho secretary should at once communicate with the Minister for Mines, and inform him that the amounts 1 had all been pnid,.so that work need not bo delayed. : Some discussion ensued as to whether the specifications would again have to bo sent to 'the 'Minister for approval. ' Mr. Aickin said that every time they were sent to Wellington it meant interminable delay. Mr. Bruce said that was because they had "knocked the stuffing out of the Mines Department" by putting it in the hands of tho Public Works Department. Mr. Aickin: It is a shame. Mr. Taylor: Yes; it is ' very regrettable Mr. Aickin: Oh, well, we will simply have to keep .them up to it, and bombard them with telegrams.--.Tenders for the crosscut at the 1000 ft. level, it was decided, should be called right away, the tenders being alternative'for tho whole distance/of, the first. 500 ft. Mr. J. Rickard, of . Thames . (manager of the Tairua. Golden Hills), was appointed supervisor in connection with tho board's work. Thero wero 14 applications for the position. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Thames, April 12. . In connection with tho commencement of work at tho Thames deep lovels it'is suggested that a fitting ceremony should bo arranged, seeing the great importanco of the works, on which the future prosperity of the Thames, from a mining point of view, depends. It is suggested that advantage should ho taken ,of the proposed visit.of the Governor about May 9, when it is hoped a ceremony befitting the occasion will be arranged.' WAIHI SHARES AMD THE MARKET. (By: Telegraph''.—Special Correspondent.) ' ■' Auckland, April 12. The Auckland share market . generally has been dull during the, past few days,' and prices have shown, a declining tendency, tho depression. in Waihis being the most noticeable feature of the operations on the Exchange. It. is now more than two years' since the market for these shares reached: so low an ebb as,.£B 17s — tho prico they touched on the local market yesterday—and speculation has been rife as - to : : what constitutes-, tho cause. Beyond the suggestion that it was one of those remarkable fluctuations. to which the soundest .stocks .are occasionally liable without any apparent reason, there seems to. bo little .'to explain the depression, as the mine is going along as soundly as ever, and . the London . market is fairly steady. To-day, however, a considerably brighter tone 'pervaded,; good, parcels ,of shares changing hands up to £9 25.,-with further demand at that price,' and sellers at £9 2s. 6d.
