COMPULSORY PILOTAGE.

' AN AUCKLAND PEOPOSAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, April 12. At this, afternoon's meeting of the Harbour Board tho following . proposal, brought forward by the chairman (Mr. A. J. Entrican), was discussed:—"That the time has now arrived when compulsory pilotage (with the usual exemptions by examination) should be introduced, and that the question of preparing th 6 necessary by-laws to give effect to', the resolution 'be referred to the By-iaws Committee." A letter was also received from the. representatives of most of tho shipping companies asking that the board should agree to receive a deputation of shipping representatives in order , that their views might be fully placed before the board while the matter is under consideration. The chairman said he would ask permission to defer his notice of .motion till next meeting, and moved that the shipping companies be invited to attend as a deputation at the next meeting. This was agreed to.
