A BISHOP'S STORIES.

DB. INGRAM'S SIX 18-LB. SALMON: At tha einnual dinner ~of„.the. Guild of St. Edmund, the members of "which are chiefly teachers in the schools under the control of the London' County Council, the Bishop of London presided, and proposed the toast of "The L.C.C. and the Education Committee."; He- said he uid not. know whether .lis hearers had ever thought what an awful thing it was to f>ee on one's luggage the word's "Bishop of London," bnt there-was an old Scotch gillie -who . went .one better, and called him "The Minister of London." He said • "It will be all right when the .Minister of London comes; he is sure to catch a .salmon." On one occaskn.'-when he was in .Scotland, he nearly converted all the' gillies from Presbyterianiijih; to Epiiscopalianism. He said .to them: "Now, old •boys, six'salmon, before lunch," and held up five fingres and a thumb. : By an extraordinary coincidence, he. had six rises and caught six 181b. salmon.. (Laughter.) That was why the "Minister of London" had an inflated reputation on the Tay. Dealing with the work of the County' Council, the speaker remarked that he looked, to the council to help in public morality work. Recently he had had one or two rather uncomfortable bits of evidence as to what was going on among the children, upon whom a strict eye must be kept in their play hours as well as their school, hours. It was. essential that healthy and clean amusements should be provided for the children. He liked a good amusement himself; he had had two good rounds of golf that day... When he had a head'iche he, liked to have a good game of "squash" at the Bath Club, and he liked to ; see .his young, friends of twenty-two; go panting into the' corner.
