(By Teleirrapli-Snocial CorressondcnU ' ■ m Fellding, March 28. -.; lbo scratching peu was freely used m th.a opeimg event, for which Strathmoira was made ' favourite. Repeat' made the pace very- fast for the first half-mile, Uut then fell back beaten, this left Toango in front of Strathmoira, but at the turn into the straight John came through and quickly cut down the field. Strathmoira was a poor third, and Repeat was last.

For the Maugaone Stakes a thoroughly representative field went to tho ppst. A. Oliver, who had just arrived lrora Auckland, had tho mount on North East .and C. Price-rode Lord Soult. | Neither of the. two brilliant sprinters was ever in the hunt, and Hermia won comfortably. Mon Ami led in the early stages, but retired when Hermia put the pressure on. St. Bill made a good effort in the straight, but he could not overtake,Hermia. Ballaiat and Golden Jiagle were next to the placed horses. Hydrant'and Maku.were the best hacked in the Kawakawa Hurdles, winch was a most interesting race. Goldbird led at'the first fence, but was at once joined by Hydrant, who then took command. .Maku kept a prominent position, and at tho half-mile ho seemed to have the race in his keeping out Oryx appeared at the home turn. He fairly flew his fence, and landed a couple of lengths to the good. In tho run home he won very easily from Maku. Aorangi fell at the third fence from homo, and H. Telford had his collarbone broken. . , . . Pikopo, Who is a stable mate of Maku was supposed to be a prime order in the Hack Hurdles, but he failed badly, and was in trouble four furlongs from home. Windage led tho whole way, and won by several longths. Himitangi fell at the fonee opposite tho outer stand, but his rider was not injured. Pikopo, the favourite, pulled up badly. Riflemaid was the only withdrawal from the Cup field, and the contestants airiooked well as they did their preliminaries. After some delay at the barrier a good start was effected, and Koran immediately took up the role of pacemaker. Passing the stand Crucinella was nearest to Koran, and the field was already strung out, showing that tho paco was solid. Down the back Milan, who had been third, was knocked back, and Coronctted joined Crucinella, while Sandstream also made a move up. -Across the bottom Koran had a three lengths break, but lie began to tire, and Crucinolla had his measure entering the straight. She then came on and won comfortably after stalling

off a challenge from Coronetted. Te Puia was fourth, and Uhlando and Bourrasque next, while Milan and Marton wero the last to finish.

John was made a good favourite in tho Hack Welter, in which, with his penalty, ho carried 9st. 111b. Nothing else was backed for any money, and the favourite, won very easily. Ukraine led to turn, but when John made his run— being fortunate enough to get through on tho rails—lie quickly disposed ol everything else.

The Halcombe Welter was voted a good handicap, and some difficulty was experienced in finding a favourite. Eventually Lady Menschikoff was selected, but her supporters were doomed to disappointment, as sho had to strike her colours to Goodwin Park, on whom Oliver was seen to advantage. Passive piloted the field in tho early part, but Goodwin Park was always with her. In the straight Goodwin Park, after a good race, beat the favourite by a length.

A bad start spoiled tho last race, and Ascalon, who was on the move when tlio tapes wont up, won by a largo margin. Lady Doris was second at. the turn, just ahead of Beacon, but Royal Marine put in a good run and beat all but the winner, who is a very big powerful animal, and he should be ,seen to advantage later on when he becomes more seasoned.. Royal Marine was very unfortunate, as he was tho last to leave the mark, and then put in a phenomenal run to get second money. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. (By. Time, 50scc. : NOTES ON THE RACING. • Aboriginal, who was reserved for the Autumn Handicap, was the only withdrawal from the Rototawai Handicap, leaving a field of six starter's. Advantage 'was-:, made, favourite, but, there was also a good demand for Overtime.: The favourite.got away well, but seemed to stop just prior to entering the straight,-and finished last. Liza, who hold a good position throughout, led for most of the journey, and was then beaten by .Splash, who came'.'with a late run. Curator was fourth,' and Te Roti fifth. ■.

• Palestine and Stepalbng were scratched for the Moroa flaok Handicap, for which Morrie Land was made a hot favourite. Prancer lost five and' Succession twenty lengths ■'at. the start. Memo Land led to the straight, and then cracked up under the whip. Magneto lasted just long enough to win by a nose, but the finish was so close that many .people thought that Leahora had won. Merrie Land was fourth', Kalypso fith '« To t, T7tuatu sixth > Campaign seventh, Prancer eighth, and Succession last.. . ■;■■-■

■ A field of seven contested the Tauherinikau Shorts, Lady Volley being the ,only .defection. Bernardino- was the third fayourite of the day to be beaten. Merrie Goer hopped off. • followed by Maykoff and Bemardine, and was never headed, winning by threequarters of a length.

The whole field of eleven started in the Autumn Handicap, for which Aboriginal was made a much better favourite than Marengo. A good deal of timo was spent at: the post, and the start was straggling, Merrie Rose getting the, worst of it. Aboriginal got clear away, and made it a one-horse race. Skye was second all the way. Merrie Rose was unfortunate in get-' ting the worst of the start. Hilarian and First Consul, who wero fourth and filth respectively, were prominent in the later stages of the race. Tru"*mni, who was sixth, found the weight too much, former. Sunbonnet was seventh then ■ followed Lethean, Mataan, and Aberration, with Marengo last. :

British Maid, wlo was made favourite m the Juvenile Handicap,'had no chance against Ballyshannon.- Inspection led on sufferance to the straight, and, until. she reached the straight, British Maid was in the ruck. I'ield Fare was fourth, Prancer fifth, and Longstep last.

Aboriginal was the only defection from tie Stewards' Handicap; in which the Blenheim-owned Glenspring was made a strong favourite. The start was a_bad one, several horses being left, Liza, who won with somethin" m hand, sustained a kick at the barrier. Overtime attended Liza for half the journey, and then finished second to last. Te Roti ran much better than he did in the Rototawai Handicap, but ho was nearly beaten for second place by Leahora. Pnrakau and Kelso did not get away well, and were never prominent. . ' Penza (who does not like heavy going) and Prancer were the scratchings for the Waiohine Hack Handicap. Owing to. their being bracketed, Kiltie Lass and Aimwell were slightly better favourites than Bow Bells and Conquestina. Conquestina,' who got well away, niado every post a winning post; She; was wpll handled by Lambess, who ran her out well at'the corner in order to keep on the more solid turf, The Tarariaki-ownod Bow Bells ran much better than on the first day,, and'had the going been harder, she would no doubt have troubled Conquestina. Kiltie Lass was fourth, Aimwell fifth, then followed Undecided, Dixie Girl, and Eightiug Maid. Prior to the start of the Autumn Handicap, Lethean was struck on the leg, and, after the race, the wound necessitated three • stitches. The most successful jockey, at tho meeting R.
