LAWN TENNIS.

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. SATURDAY'S PLAY. . The provincial lawn tennis tournament was continued on Saturday, the senior championships being played at Thorndon and tho junior at Brougham Hill. The high wind was very unfavourable to the games. . In the Men's Singles (senior) the first round was completed by the' victory of Brown over Young, but the victor fell before tbe clever strokes of a more experienced-player, Smythe, in the second round. Smythe' met Cox in the third round, and pushed him in the first set, but lost it at B—6, and'the second at 6—4. In tho final Cox did not play up to his usual form, and Swanston was therefore able to annex the championship (6 —4, 6 —4) without extending himself. In the Men's Doubles the victory of Brown and Prouse over Ward and Sheppard (second round), was only obtained after a hard-fought contest, in which the honours more than once seemed likely to fall to the other side. The victors were unable to overcome the supe-.ior knowledge of Cox and Swanston in the final. . Miss Nunneley carried everything before her in the Ladies' Singles and will meet Miss Travers in the final tbis afternoon. She will also (with Miss Williams as Jier partner) niaet Mrs. Holmes and Miss Batham in tho -final for the Ladies' Doubles. In the Combined Doubles, Miss Williams and Cox had the best-of their contest.with Miss Marchant and Young (6—3, 5—3), but .retired, in order to assist the management in.working out the draw. Their' oppmonts thus won by Miss Nunneley ■ and Brown beat Miss Batham and Beere (6 —2, 7 —5), although Brown was uot up.to his usual form. The other matches of the round presented no features calling for comment. Only one match was played in the second round, Miss Travers and Salmond defeating Miss Simpson and Prouse. They will meet the winners in..tho top half this afternoon.

F. Eller proved to be the winner of the junior championship, although 1. Jones looked very much like defeating him in the third round, and it was a "ding-dong go"' betweeu the winner and Wright in the final The Ladies' Singles (junior) provided some interesting games, but was unfinished. _ Miss Morgan has to meat Miss Dans in tho .final. The most interesting game in the' Ladies' Doubles was that in which Mrs. Burton and Miss. Morgan defeated Misses Rothschild and Hayes. After the winners had led at s—o and 7—2 the scores were equalised at but Mrs. Burton and Miss Morgan.won in the end, 10—8. In the final Misses Bennett and Home were rather disappointing, the wind evidently troubling them a good deal. Miss Morgan, however, despite the fact that she had already played seven sets with little or no.intermission, was full of vigour, and with Mrs. Burton at the net won the final by 9-2.. i

The Combined Doubles, of which only one match had been played on the previous day, provided many'interesting contests.*' In the final Miss Dimaircand Ward defeated Miss Rothschild and Howe, 9—5. With Ward at the net, Howe was given no chances. The tournament will be finished this afternoon on the Thondon courts; play commencing at 1.30.
