The bow of each vessel •• was stove in, .but the airtight compartments prevented them sinking. Harconigrams brought the cruisers Bacchante' and Aboukir,, which tugged the destroyers to a place of safety. [The destroyer Stag was built at Thorneycroft's yard, Chiswick, in 1900, and is a.SO-knot boat of 320 tons displacement. The Mallard is another Thorneycroft boat of almost.the same displacement and speed, but of an older type, having been built in 1896.]
