It is descending at the rate of half a mile hourly. It has destroyed the villages of Capriolo and Barello, and is threatening Bclpasso. The inhabitants aro placing sacred relics in front of their houses. Twenty-three shocks wefo registered at Etna Observatory in eight hours. . [Catania is on the east coast of Sicily, near the.foot of Etna. It.has often been ruined by earthquakes and eruptions of Etna, but always rebuilt in a superior style. Its streets are paved with lava, of which material tho public 'buildings aro _ constructed, being faced with magnesian limestone and enriched with marble.
