Winnipeg started out the New Year determined to be billion dollar city as far as the bank clearings are concerned (says the of Empire") and if the same pace is kept up during tie year as was shown in the first week's business the figures will be well over that mark by the end of the year.' Although the first week of the year is never a big one, if the same weekly figures are kept up .for the entire fifty-two weeks or the year the . clearings . wfll amount to 1,002,836,640 dollars. 'There : is a big increase over last : year's first week's .business, : and tie total fox the month . will run about, twenty million dollars more. All that is needed to make this a.billion dollar city is a monthly increase of twelve, and a half million dollars.
