: " ■" ~*— , GAS' COMPANY'S ENGINEER. staff of the Wellington Gas Company assembled yesterday afternoon for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr. H. Birch, the company's engineer, who is retiring after thirty-five, years' serr vice, on account, of ill-health. Mr. W. Ferguson, managing director, in presenting Mr. Birch with a handsome illuminated address, said that it was with feelings of great regret 'that he was parting with Mr. Birch at the end of this month. ', Both he and the staff appreciated his services most thoroughly. ■ • v ' Mr. J. Kejshaw said that he had been associated with- Mr. Birch for the past thirty-three years, and it had been a pleasing association. He could not call to mind an instance ■ where one untoward word had passed between them. Mr. Weir, another old member of the staff, spoke in similar _ terms. ■ Mr..Birch, in thanking the staff for their handsome present, said that'ho could look back with some gratification at the wonderful progress which the company had made in harmony with the progress of this city. He remembered the time when he was the only fitter. The company had prospered, and it had been a pleasure to him to have been associated with the success of the Wellington Gas Company. He looked forward to the time when they would have works at Miramnr, which would be unsurpassable. They had in' Mr. Ferguson and Mr. M'Dougall professional talent that would carry out this work in an irreproachable - way. : Dr. Pollen, has resumed the practico of. his profession at No. 12 ■■ Boulcott Street. .
