(From Our Sueclal OorresDondent.l Palmerston, March 22.A 'special meeting of the High School Bonrd of Governors was convened for last night to consider a scheme for enlarging tlio representation on tho Technical School Board, and thereby creat. ing greater interest in the school., Owing, to a meeting of the Chamber ; of Commereo being called for tho same evening,'- several members of the High School Board wore unablo t-o attend. Thefo was consequently no quorum. The committee of tho Caledonian Society met last night, .the president (Mr. G. M'Donald) being in the chair. Final arrangements wero made for the gathering on Easter Monday. A letter Was read •from Mr. U. Shannon, liandicapper, regretting-that, ; as he had just been appointed to-handicap for another sport? gathering, he would not bo able to frame the handicaps for t-h'is society. Very, strong comment wasmade'.on Mr. Shannon's action in throwing, over Ms engagement on-the eve of the closing, of nominations, and the appointment ofMr. J. i. ,At the. Magistrate's Court to-day a sum of £1 14s'., and costs, was recovered by the borough f pound-keeper from Thomas Mills, for the sustenance of a. horse in the pound. It was stated in evidence that owners of decrepit animals found that the easiest way to get rid of such was to turn them out,'get them impounded,'and then' the pound-keeper, saved them, the expense of destroying; them.: In. thisinstance the animal was sold at auction for 25., but that did not ,cpver the cost of keeping ; it; ' Defendant 6aid' that ho did not own the animal, but had sold it to-one Stevens l for -'£2.Stevens, however, denied buying it, and added that.Jio Lad. borrowed it, and only rode it once. After that the Society for prevention of Cruelty, to Animals' inspector warned him against riding it, and he had returned it to tho defendant after "having" had" it for' about a month. Tho magistrate said that he was'ijot; satisfied 'that 'defendant had sold the horse, and gave judgment for plaintiff for £1 145., with costs 14s.

Mr. Edward Pritchard,Morris, a very old resident of Palmeraton North, passed away to-day, aged 74 years. He was greatly esteemed by a large circle of friends.

At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Mrs. Kirk Roberts, of Ronjjotea, sued Thomas Duncan, of Huntervilfe; .for the sum of £7 , for wearing apparel destroyed, £1 10s.- for- domestic'-' assist- , anop, aiid £66 10s'. general damages, alleged to harp'.-been."-, caused .by defendant's bullock rushing plaintiff and knocking her into mud hole on February 6. From tho' evidence of plaintiff, it appeared that, on. the, date iu question, she was proceeding to Church with her little daughter. On her way sho passed some ■ bullocks which wero running on either side of tho road, and .unattended. A bullock; a little further ahead, suddenly made a dash at Lei-, und knocked, her into a mud hole- on tho opposite sido of tilie road. As she , tried :'to -extricate herself, , she"saw tho bullock knock tho child dowii on tho other sido of tho road, and she tried to go to the child's assistance The beast again turned his attention to her, ,-ihd knocked'.her back into ~tho hole, and butted her with his head, but, fortunately, the horns wero deformed, and turned inwards, otherwise sho would have sustained serious injuries. She screamed for help, and assistance came, and she was driven homo,. with., her child, both receiving, ■medical treatment the same evening. Sho was obliged to keep i,o her bed for several days ; after the occurrence, and had stiffored. greatly from shock and fright, besides being badly bruised. Judgment was' given for the special damages claimed'in full, viz., £8 10s. and.£2o. General damages, with costs of Court, £2, solicitor's fee £2 10s., and witnesses' expenses £5 17s.
