THE DEAN OF WESTMINSTER AND THE ELECTIONS.

The Dean of Westminster, preaching in the Abbey recently, said:

At this moment we aro under a cloud of great discouragement. The tone of the appeal made on all sides without exception in politics to the multitudes of our people has been lower than at any previous general election. ■ A few of our greatest and most responsible leaders stand out as rare exceptions, maintaining their dignity and integrity amid the confused din of selfish appeals, vulgar'insinuations, insincere arr guments, and deliberate deceptions. It is vain to plead in excuse that in tile heat of conflict men lose their' self-con-trol, and are hardly to be. held responsible for the statements they' make or the arguments they use. No doubt what is in a man comes out in moments of exceptional excitement;. There are moments which reveal, character and show who can govern himself and who cannot. But God save this nation from the rule of men who cannot govern themselves in ' time of' exceptional strain I And may God lead us all to repentance for this common- disregard of truth and purity of motive at a moment ,of". serious national crisis! Brethren, let us earnestly' pray that as' a people "we. may bo presented unto Him with pure and clean hearts." We shall not pray in vain, if," as we believe, God still has a.mission for us in the : world. . . .. . ,
