ARRESTS IN JAT REGIMENT.
The "Englishman" published on December 18.an alarmist-statement to the. eifect that ten 'men, of, the 10th. Pa ts Infantry Regiment ■• have i been placed under arrest for conspiring. :with,sedition. There"is, according to. the official view, no; reason to suspect any-, thing more serious; than a'■ breach , of discipline onvtho part of a few misguided men v>'ho have been attending meetings in the houses.of. certain'wellknown' agitators with whom made friends. The meetings were held first at Midnapore, and afterwards in.Calcutta. Colonel Cowans, brigade commander at Fort, William, Calcutta, is • investigating the matter. The loyalty of the rest of the regiment/is not suspected, and no order for its transfer ' has yet been made. ■". \ Tho 10th Jats'were lately known as i-tho 10th Bengal Infantry, and have, .their headquarters at Alipore, under it-he command of Major-General Firth. : iTho Jats, who are mainly agriculturists Wl cattle-breeders, are scattered over tho Punjab and the Rajput States, as well as through Sind and the North-' Vest Provinces.' They are of divers re-' Virions, those in flie .cast. professing a modified Brahmanism, those , m the west being Moslems, aiul. those in the Punjab being of the Sikh faith.
