.AN ASCENT. " With a View to .popularising' the 1 ' trip up the Tararuag, ■Mr,/T;'M:'Prummbn(f, surveyor," and Mr. Mart Maxton, both' of Greytown,';kave;'beojr 'collecting sub-' scnptions to'.'open'up. a"track ; to Mount Hector. They have also.had a couple of men employed clearing a line as'far as■' Mount Reeves, and on March 18 organparty to make the ascent. The Sarty - consisted of. Messrs. Drummond, WxtoivT. .Ryan, L. J: Stratford, Scoutmaster W. I. Shanley, and Scouts Hawke and Lister, from Greytown; Messrs. H. Catt, E. M'Kenzie, R. Canton, and- R. :Smith, from Carterton; and' Scouts Sheen, Aitcheson, Toogood, Burt, Rowe, Anderson, and Mead, from Featherston. The ascent is steep from BassettV whare till the ridge of the range is leached, and then it is fairly good going for some distance. It took three and a half hours to make the trip up, and two and a half hours to descend, but when really on the summit all recollections of the hfcavy travelling were banished by the charm of the panorama spread but to view. Part of Featherstori, the Wairarapa Lake, and Martinboroiigh, and the Wairarapa Plains' formed a magnificent sight, with the mountains on the western 6ide as a hack view. Greytown was well in sight, and with'the aid of binoculars the streets and houses were easily recognisable. Carterton also showed up well in the distance. Turning round ana looking at the higher mountains, Holdsworth is clearly visible (4825 feet), Mount Crawford (4795 feet), and nearer to view are tho. Cone (3547 feet), Hector (501G feet), and Alpha (4407 feet), While Reeves is 2949 feet high. 4 Having reached this, the next objective is the Cone and then Mount Hector, but more monetary assistance is required, and the' organisers are appealing to mountaineers and others interested to send subscriptions to tho Mayor of Greytown, who is acting as treasurer of the fund.
