ST. PATRICK'S DAY

FETE ATHUTT. To very many in Wellington and the immediate district St. Patrick's Day would not be St. Patrick's Day without the annual picnio and sports at "Father Lane's."'," Yesterday, this popular, event again occupied a favoured place among the day's events. The'proceedings' began in the city with a procession from-Boul-cott Street to; the railway station.' Tho' pleasant grounds beside the river at Lower Hutt were' soon thronged with happy holiday-makers.'- The' children, who were present 'in great force, were provided for by a large number of races and other contests,: and there were also a few athletic events for men, and competitions for-girls in Irish jig's and reels. Many sheltered spots.under the willows and beside the river proved to be ideal places for.- the exploitation of picnic hampers. The gathering was organised successfully by a joint committee of the Wellington Catholic Club and. the city and suburban branches of the Hibernian Society. Sir Joseph Ward, Miss Ward, and Mr; Gladstone Ward'motored out from Wellington, and visited the gathering during the afternoon. ' ',

The following were the results of the principal items on the sports programme: Hop, Step,. and Jump.—Harnett (scr.), 38ft. 2in., 1; Strickland (Ift.), 37ft. 6in.J! High Jump.—H. D. St. Patrick's Day was favoured with beautiful weather. The usual procession took place in.the city, 3500 children participating. This was followed by sports on Takapuna racecourse. A great many Seople also went by special trains to the 'garuawahia regatta, Napier, March 17. St. Patrick's Day was celobrated by a picnio at Farndon Park under the auspices of the Napier and Hastings brauches of the. Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit' Society. About 1600 persons took. part. There were some showers during the. day. '
