Speaking on the subject of the withdrawal by lie Government of the capitation allowances previously granted to school-committees, Mr. Jamieson pointed out that it would be better to abandon the free \ school-book system and restore capitation. The free-book system, he contended, had been a failure, and the amount expended on that i system exceeded by £267 ,10s. sd. the total capitation payable for incidentals. Free books, he "added, were not asked for, all that was wanted being [uniformity .of school books for children moving from place to place.

COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. i Christchurch, March 16. Charles Eonald MTherson, charged at the Magistrate's Court with having broken and entered the Church of Christ on 7, and stealing 15s. from the col-lection-box, and with having on March 9 broken and entered the Spiritualists' Church and stealing an overcoat and fountain pen, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial.

As a result of Sunday's boating fatality a representative meeting held last night decided to form a Lifeboat Association, and to convene a public meeting of citizens on .Friday! TENDER FOR FACTORY. Hastings, March 16. The Leather and Rubber Company has accepted a tender for <£389 for the erection of a factory, to bo completed at the end of May. -

IRISH SOCIETY S SPORTS. Invercargill, March 16. At the Irish Athletic Societies' annual sports to-day the Sheffield event, in which competitors from as far north as Hastings took part, was won by Strang, of Invercargill, with Chalmers, of Dunedin, second.

MAORI CHARGED WITH MURDER. Auckland, March 16. The constable at Raglan has arrested a Maori named Matetu Purua, who is charged with murdering another Native— Temana Haromona. The only particulars available are that Haromona was shot at one o'clock this morning, and died at ; o'olock. 1

Miss Amy Murphy, the ex-Dunedin vocalist, who is now a. resident of Sydney, arrived . here yesterday on route to J)unedin, where ; she is to give a concert. It is 'probable that She may be heard in Wellington before returning to 'Australia!
