PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

At the meeting of-the Borough Council last night, a letter was read from the Gas Company to the effect that the directors of the company were willing to meet the council in conference to discuss the question of the borough purchasing . the gasworks, but before, this could ■be done it wouid.be necessary lor the borough to formulate some. proposal as a basis-on which to discuss tlie matter. The' Mayor pointed out that the Borough Council 1 was not prepared to make, any proposal. His idea had been that they might meet .the directors and discuss , the question, but if the company look up u, is', position, the matter had totter be,-dropped, which was agreed to. ihe Mayor and Councillor Haydon .were appointed to represent the council at the Municipal Conference-to be held in Wellington. The Manawatu City Council wrote asking for assistance in making the road from I?ox ton to the Manawatu heads, but the. council could not see its way to contribute, as, although most of tlie foreshore leases were held by Palmerstiin residents,; they. had to pay rent to the Foxton Harbour Board. jr. The Oroua Lodge of Druids (Palmeu ston)-held its ordinary meeting last night, when there was a large attendance, and Bro. Lyall, A.D./ occupied the pnair. r Ihree neiv members were- initiated, one joined by clearance, "and six others were- proposed. J. Armstrong, chairman Members :C. A. Ewen, H. Haydon, J. J Mallard, J. A. Nash, W. M. Simpson, A. Turner. C. C. Warner, superintendent and secretary. L G architect,_ C. W. Blackburn, builder. After the stone had been laid an adjournment was . made to the present fire station, where light refreshments were partaken of and speeches 'made by the chairman of the board, the- Mayor, and n ? w . station ;-will cost a trifle over .£3OOO, and .will be equipped with up-to-date appliances, .
