RIFLE SHOOTING.

• —. —* THE CADET'S "TRENTHAM." GBEYTOWN ON TOP. ■ Owing to the generosity of the Wairarapa ltifle Association, the Wairarapa Farmers' Co-operative Association, and others, the School Cadets of the .Wairarapa Battalion, which takes in cadet corps from Pahiatua to Featherston, arc provided annually with a miniature "Trontham." This meeting is held on the Pnpawai range at Greytown very .soon after the Wairarapa .Rifle Association's own mpotfng, and the number of competitors averages about'7o. It is held under the supervision of the cadet officers of the battalion, and-is looked forward to with keen zest by the boys. The W.F.C.A. annually gives trophies to the value of two guineas for the winner of the championship and to the runner-up. ' The Wairarapa' Rifle Association gives' £5 for a special match, called the Association's match, and this sum is split up .into 24 prizes, ranging from; ten shillings to half-a-crown in value. In addition, there is ,a Teams' match, open to teams of five boys each from the different cadet companies; each company may enter one or more teams, and the winning company holds for twelve months a very . handsome shield presented by the "gentlemen of the Wairarapa." 'I he championship of the battalion is awarded to the cadet who makes the highest score in the Association and Teams' matches combined. The conditions' for each match are: Seven shots, with optional sighter, at 100 and 200 yards; six-inch bull's-eye, as at Trentham.. The shield has been won as follows:—1905, Masterton; 1906,. Grey town; 1907, i'eatherston; 1908, 1909, 1910, Greytown; while a Greytown boy. has also held the championship for the past three years. The competition this yeaT took place on Saturday last, and the weather conditions were much more favourable than those for the adults' Trentham —the day being sunny, though a strong left breeze, blew all day. .In spite of the wind, some of the shootin" was of a high standard, especially when it is considered that the' miniature. (.310) rifle is used. The meeting_ was held, under the supervision .of Major- Haslam, commanding the Wairarapa Battalion of P.S.
