Women's Employment Bureaux. .The Auckland Bureau report for last month states, that: application's had beep received from 251: omployers, and applications for >ork from. sli women.. Many extra girls .are engaged at this season' at Hotorua and other ■ tourist; resorts, , where they are' offered' better wages. Their fares are paid to the districts, and they make a, good deal by way of. tips. In, reference to, the women who apply for employment, there is always during the "course ■ of, the month a small percentage who are utterly incapable, and the, office cannot take the | responsibility'of sending them to work. At Ghristchurch, 90. people applied for employment, and 225 employers asked for workers. A ■ great many .inquiries have been received for machinists, coat and skirt hands, girls for laundries, and picklefactories; also for shirt Wages for domestics in town range from 15s. to.-iii; and girls,.for. the country cannot be induced to go under any circumstances. .Three-quarters of the applications, received for generals are not filled owing to the dearth of girls. ■ In Nelson "it is very difficult to get domestic workers.'at- , this time of year, when there is a great demand for raspberry and hop-pickers, and girls are glad of the change from. the ordinary domestic rbiituie. Fifty.: applications were, rereceived : for. workers,: and sixteen for wort '• .■:".. , „;.'■'■■.. ■'■■' : ;.',".-■; "•'•■ ". ' Dunedin had 144 applications from employers, and 62;fro>m people seeking work. Wellington reports that two Home vessels, the Enapehu- and - the, Tainni, had been ;met._ -0n1y..: five domestics from over-seas:were assisted during tho<month. It is- very .unlikely that her expectations. will '■ be. realised. Many of the/applicants are' not .earnest-in their desire to'obtain'work, especially amongst the Igenerals; and others, owing, to various reasons; principally is to' character, could not possibly, bo.'recommended for situations. This in '• part expjains the discrepancy between the .number of applications from domestics and the .number- assisted. Ignorance of the. profound and credulous: sort is a.theme discoursed by Ifcfr. jr.-E., Chesterton,, who declares .it. was revealed on every.'side during the recent jerieral • election."
