The Dominion. MONDAY, MARCH 14, 1910. THE OUTLOOK FOR MEAT.
The prospects of the frozen meai trade are specially interesting jusi now in view of the fact that heavj shipments will be going forwarc during the current month and ■ir April and May. These prospectiv( heavy shipments have caused some in the trade, to become nervous, fearing that a slump will follow ai was the case last year. The condi tions, however, are not the same, anc there is, as far as can be seen, n< prospect of a recurrence of the dis aster experienced in 1909. At thi; time last: year consumption was re stricted; the people were unable tc make purchases, and although price! were reduced they were not lowerec sufficiently to meet the position anc stimulate consumption. The Higt Commissioner in his cabled report dated March 6, 1909, said with re gard to mutton and lamb: "The mutton market is weak. Stock, on hand are heavy, and are widely dis tributed amongst agents, who are push ing sales. There are large shipment coming forward and. prospects arc un favourable as buyers aro not incline! to make forward purchases at presen prices. The, lamb market is weak Stock is heavy and there is a dull sail for all brands." The conditions'ruling a year age were decidedly unfavourable, and al though the agents were pushing salei they were unable, to materially re duoe stocks. How different the con ditions arc how may be seen by com paring the quotations for the firsi week of this month with those.of £ year ago. The figures are as under:
The High Commissioner's ropori this year takes a very different tone It saya: "' . • "There is a better demand for mutton Stocks on hand are liirht. and firmlheld in few hands: The lamb marke is veryiirm, and there :is great competi tiqn to secure , the moderate eupplie; going forward. ■ Trospects are rathe more encouraging." " • • ■ The prices reflect the improved posi tion. The meat is going into con sumption at higher prices than i year ago and the obvious deductioi is that the consumers are better abl< to afford the cost. . . With respect to supplies we havi the approximate shipment: of mutton and lamb from New Zea land, Australia and the River Plate and taking the four months Novem ber-February the figures for ead country compare as under: v New Zealand... ' ■
2,119,614 1.8G5.045 This season to date the total shipments show a decrease of 43,549 carcasses of mutton and 146,955 of lamb, as compared with the correspond* t) S period of, last season, and it will not bo contended that this slight shortage has made so great a difference to the values and the conditions of the market. The changed l circumstances of the consumers and I the correct attitudo adopted by the i agents in meeting the market demands must be credited with the im-
provement. It is very likely that pricee will recede when the shipments becomo hoavior, but we fail to see anything in the situation to warrant the belief that a slump will again' be experienced this year. Meat shippers may, under the circumstances, look for a reasonablj fair level of values during the next five months.
