HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Onr Special Correspondent.) o : TECHNICAL SCHOOL MATTERS. The monthly meeting of the Petone Technical School Governors was held last evening, when there were present: Rev. Mr. Thomson (chairman), Messrs. M'Kenzie, Trueman, Southgate, Castle, Lee, M'Ewan, Baldwin, and Findlay. The chairman, on asking for the confirmation of the minutes, was interrupted by Mr. Lee, who asked: "Are ive a properly constituted board?" going on to say that he (Mr. Lee) considered the last meeting illegal, on the ground that the Department had not notified the board of its status, and, further, that there were members present at the last meeting who were not eligible. . The chairman maintained that the board was properly constituted, and that he was following the practice of past years. Mr. Lee: "The practice of past years has been most irregular." . " The secretary here explained that ho was in receipt of a letter from the Minister for Education pointing out exactly who were bona-fide members of the board. Mr. Baldwin contended that tho board was properly constituted until such time as successors were appointed. After some warm argument the minutes were finally confirmed. The Rev. Mr. Thompson was re-elected chairman, Mr. Castle hon. secretary, and Mr. Duncan.hon;.treasurer. . •
A communication was received from the Education Department pointing, out that as the Petone Borough Council had handed in to the board ,£6O (two years' donation) they were entitled to four members r on the board, or two more than were at present sitting. It was decided that as 1 soon as the Petone Council forwarded members' names, the secretary would send them on to the Department. . The instructor in shorthand and typewriting was authorised to accept an extra fee of 10s. for speed tuition. -.-■; Mr. M'Kenzie moved that a guarantee be accepted in the case of proficiency scholars, instead of the initial fee of 30s. An amendment was moved to the-effect that the rule should not be altered, but in extreme cases an allowance should bo' made. The amendment was carried. ~
The Director (Mr. J. Lynskey) reported that, a matriculation class had been begun in Petone, but as only two subjects were taught, it was proposed to ask the board to tako over the remaining subjects. The Director was instructed to work up tne class and report to. the board. HUTT. NO-LICENSE LEAGUE. ',. "'. At a meeting of . Hutt No-License League last evening, Mr. W. Sussex was unanimously elected secretary. _• Active measures were discussed and decided on with-a:\-iew to rallying the No-License party preparatory to the-next local option poll.- The Rev. Mr. Sharp, retiring secretary, was heartily thanked for his services.: JOTTINGS. , Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, Mayor of Petone, has been nominated for the position of a member of the new Hospital Board by Messrs. R. C. Kirk, G. T. London, W. Inglis, J. Cotton, H.- Findlay, W. Hearno, E. J. Southgate,. James Collet, and[ C. P. Brocklebank. ' , .It is understood that Mr. E. P. Bunny, present Mayor of! Lower Hutt, will. not offer himself again'as a candidate for the Mayoral' seat. It- is quite possible that Councillor Baldwin will contest the seat, and may ■be opposed by Mr. W. H. Russell. :. '■
