ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

THE CHAMPIONSHIP WALKING .' . EVENTS. . A PROTEST FROM TARANAKI. The monthly meeting of the Council of the' New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last evening. Thero were present: Messrs. A. Marryatt (chairman), E. L. Chaffev, C. E. Bridge, J. F. Thompson, ,T. H. Pollock, H. Henderson W. F. Larkin, aud A. Davies.

A letter was received from the Canterbury Centre regarding Marathon races, and' it was decided that the . matter bo deferred until next meeting, when the remits from the conference' of centres at Auckland will be received.

The .Amateur Athletic Union of Australasia notified that Rule .1 relative to the Australasian . cross country. . championship had been so' altered and amended as to allow of-the words "five miles course" reading five or ten miles course at the option of the association holding the m'eoting. The letter was received.

Tlie Dunedin Centre wrote asking for a rilling as to whether amateurs and pr« fessionals could compete together ut house and trade sports, trophies only being granted as prizes. It was resolved that professionals and amateurs cannot compete together at house and trade picnics and sports) ■

Tho Presbyterian Young Men's Bible Class Union applied for permission to insert in their programme a clause to the effect that tho sports be tun under tho rules of the N.Z.A.A.A., who have kindly allowed bona fide Bible class members to compete irrespective ot their athletic status. Members must have attended at least four meetings before being eligible tb. compete. It was resolved to reply that the rules relating to professionalism did. not permit of this being done. . • The Southland. Centre wrote asking that entry forms be amended so'as- to show, a competitor's twelve months' performances, instead 'of his last six performances. ,It was decided to reply that the council saw. no. reason, for this being done.

, Tho Wellington' Centre wrote' applying for tho affiliation of tho Woodvillo Amateur Athletic Union. It was resolved, to agree to the application provisionally, subject. to. the Wellington; Centre being satisfied as to tho club's rules.

; The Horowhenua Athletic Association made application for permission to run bicycle and foot races. at a sports meeting to bo held at Levin on March 17, at which pony races and trots were to bo held. The application was referred to the Wellington Centre. Mr. L. B. Webster, of tho New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club, wrote stating. that, being a. visitor and an official at the reoeut J'lew Zealand championship meeting as secretary of his. club, he. wished' to protest against any application for record or standard time wnich may come forward' in connection with the walking . events. • He. ventured to ventilate his experience whilst the walking event—three , miles—was. in. progress. Being an official, lie came in contact, with others . officiating,. several of whom were - all well known to him., Tho walkers had not gone 220 yards when one well-known official volunteered this to him: "Well, Pat., this is not the Dave Wilson we used to know, but," lie added, "it won't do. to let the. judge hear us say that," . Tho Wellington Centre applied to have W. A. Woodger's performance in'the 220 yards at the Wellington provincial'championship meeting, .which he ran in 22 2-s'sec., recognised as a record.. It was decided to"' refer th® matter back'to the Wellington Centre for further certificates. . Applications , for reinstatements were dealt .with as follow:—G.„W. Lawrence to apply again after , three, years from date of last professional performance;. J. M'G, Grierson, referred for consideration of Southland' Centre; A. H;,Bruton (Dunedin), reinstatement agreed to from October 1, 1910; M. Mickelson (Dunedin), declined; W. Gosling (Auckland), declined; J. J, O'Grady- (Ashburton), reinstatement agreed to. Applications were received from the Woodvflle Club for reinstatement of a number of its members. It was resolved to refer the applications to the Wellington Centre, through which they should have come in th® first place.

The sub-committee appointed /by the council |to draw up a report as to the. best method of dealing with "Wellington's preponderance of territory recommended as follows:—(1) That the Canterbury Centre be asked to include in their territory the West- Coast, Marlborough, and; Nelson districts; (2) that Wanganui be aslced to ..form a centre, to. include air clubs from Marton ~ northward to Taranaki's northern boundary; (3) failing Wanganui being able to form a centre that Taranaki be then asked to do so: The subcommittee do not recommend that Taranaki be thrown in with Auckland; 'as the. latter have, already a very large district in, which, 'with a little zeal and energy, a number, of. athletic clubs could be formed.. It was decided to hold the matter over' until the receipt of remits from the. conference of centres. It was decided to allot the cross country championship. for 1910 to Southland. . It was resolved, owing to the constitution of the association, that it was not feasible to . register under the Incorporated Societies Act.
