THE MAYORALTY.
ME. C. CRAWPQED A CANDIDATE. Mi'. Charles J. Crawford; ' Mayor of Miramar, has- definitely decided to become a candidate: for the Mayoralty of Wellington. .Mr. Crawford was'waited oil by a deputation of Miramar ratepayers yesterday morning—among ■ whom - wore Messrs. J. i M. Geddis, G. Brodie, W. C. Stevens, Geo. Hurley, and Fabian—and v.-as asked to reconsider his decision 1 declining nomination for the Mayoralty .of Afirriraai\ • They felt that" the borough affairs were safe-in his. hands and'that if he consented to stand" there would be little fear of a contest. In reply Mr.' Crawford said that he very much appro dated the compliment paid him, ■ coming as it did'after three years as Mayor of Miramar, but' owing to solicitations from many quarters he had decided to' contest the Mayoralty of, Wellington, which, of course, debarred him from , accepting the kind ; request of -the residents of Miramar represented by thoa present., . •
Mr.; Charles ..Crawford has been engaged for many years, on and off, in local body business.. Twenty years ' ago ha was, elected a member of ;.the,-Mount Stewart Eoad Board in'Otago. On taking up his residence in Wellington he. immediately interested: himself in local government in the district where his' in-; terests lay. He . was elected U member and subsequently chairman of the defunct Sealoun Road Board, and when that ceased to be and Seatoun and Miramar were separate from the parent body and formed a borough, he became a member of the .Borough Council, and' for the past three years has, been .Mayor of the borough. ' . .'. :■'
ME.: JOHN P. LUKE'S ATTITUDE. ■ Mr. J. P. Luke, who has been asked tu stand for the " position of Mayor at .r.ext month's. election, puts the matter this way:—lf the Council desires him to. assist' in completing tho works it had taken, in hand during his term of office, -h'j would be willing to' favourably consider the question of nomination for ths Mayoralty, always providing that he waa able to make the necessary business arrangements.' '
I . MR. WILFORD'S INTENTIONS. Mr. T.. M. Wilford was rung. up" last ■ evening to see if 'he ;.had, come. to adecision in regard to the Mayoralty. His reply was that he hid made a decision— but what that decision was ho; was not prepared .to say.
