COLLEGE GOVERNORS.
RECENT EXAMINATION SUCCESSES^ A meeting of: the Wellington College Board of Governors was held ■■ yesterday. There were present: Mr. A. de B. Brandon (chairman), Miss Richmond, the Hon. Dr. Kiidlay, Dr. Newman, Messrs. 11. Lee, AY. 1\ Ward, and C. Warburton. ilr. A. dc B. Brandon was elected chairman for the forthcoming year. The chairman, reported that the Hon. Dr. r'incllay had been reappointed a member of (he board. The balance-sheet showed as follows:— Balance, J;M08 7s. 4(1.; payments required, 'Wellingtnn College .£478 2s. 6d.; Girls' College, ,£2CO 15s. 10d., fees outstanding J2233 2s. Id., rents outstanding. .KITS 12s. It was reported that Ihere were 430 pupils at Wellington College (117 paving and 31.1 free place), and 227 at the Girls' College (71 paying, and 156 free place). The largo amount of fees outstanding was explained by the number of freeplace students for whom subsidies were due from the Government. The headmaster of Wellington College (Mr. J. P. Firth) wrote as follows:"The Education. Department has for some years spoken very severely about our lack of equipment for tho teaching of sciencp. f suggest that estimates be obtained of the cost of converting the old gymnasium into a chemical laboratory. Certainly we are very far behind th'e equipment of the other large secondary schools of "New /;oaland in this respect. I trust that the Board of Governors will accede to my „ request, and will, in the meantime, agree to spend JC2S in chemicals and minor apparatus for the carrying tin of the science work. It was decided to spend ,£25 in the mnnner recommended. The headmaster of Wellington College reported as follows on recent examination results:—Junior university scholarship one pupil passed; senior national scholarship, two; Gillies scholarship, one; credit on junior university scholarship. Jour; Civil Service senior, two; Civil Service senior (three subjects), one; matriculation, medical preliminary, solicitors general knowledge, 25; senior board scholarships, 10; Civil Service junior (credit), 11; Civil Service junior (pass). 16; senior free place, 18; total, 121.
