S. Smith was ; chosen to fill .'the vacancy,., caused, by.- the\'resignation: of Mr. E. W. Knowing The latter, has' held a seat on: the board for .'eighteen years, and the . news of ■ his: resignation was received' with' expressions-of'regret. 'Wellington, Christchurch,, Hokitifca, Hanmor, and : Queenstown: were" proposed for- the, next '.place,:of ' and- the. last-mentioned chosen by a large majority.
