' A meeting of the council of tho Chamber of Commerce, was held last; evening, Present, ; Captain Haydon: ' (president),' Messrs. R. Gardner; J.. Wallace, M. A. Eliott, G. W." Harden; 11. F. Gibbons; L. E. Collmson; and T. R. Hodder. ■■ Correspondence was read from' Chamber. suggebtiriß .the throiigt.'bookihg of goods from point to point by-the Railway 1 Department, and .'asking' for. the support of. tho Palmerston Chamber.- The meeting decided to assist the • movement in any way possible. In connection " t with, the railway time-table, the Minister ioi Railways wrote; that he would be pleased .to meet a deputation on the;; question while on his way to Feilding' shortly, and it was 'decided to' mate, arrangements to meet the . Minister.; at; Palmerston... Mr. Gardner brought up the ■ question of renaming tiie town of Palmerston North, suggesting that it' should bo altered to some' 'appropriate Maori name. - Ho thought the. jvord "North" attached to ! the'present name was rather outre, and something • better should, ; be found • for the fifth city of .the Dominion. "After some discussion' the matter was dropped. In regard to: the'; outting-lip and roaaing of' the native reserves, in' the borough, it was resolved to ask the Borough- Council to. ; co-operate 'with l the' Chamber in securing, legislation, next' session, to:bring this about,; as it was 'felt, that theso' areas" under the' present .-' conditions ' were: retarding -the- progress Vof- the''town."
