.-, ■ THE BLACK.FAMILY. ' \ \ Heralded as"The Musical All-Blacks," the members of. the well-known Black family .of musicians inaugurated. their Wellington concert: season at. the Opera Houso last evening, before a fair attendance of the public- Kinematographs and musical itemsf-vocal and 'instrumentalmade up a programme that was. well' received by an'audience inclined at the outset to be somewhat.unresponsive, a depressing circumstance created no doubt by ■the quality, of-the., first- item—a ; scenic jnlni of an uninter.estiug.character and fair quality. This was: succeeded by several very: good films, and : the character' ofi'the entertainment thereafter..distinctly- improved. The first part :of the programme concluded'.with'a.cornet,'solo by Mr. Bert Black,: tho' interest of his performance .being enhanced by illustrated lantern , pictures. The : musical programme' proper was;,nicely varied. .It. opened, with, an operatic selection, from '"Maritana" by the ■■ Black Family, followed by :Zardo's "To the' Angels," sung very tastefully by .Miss Nellie-Black, with ..-organ, 'cello, and piano accompaniment. Miss Elsie Black, the flautist of. the. company,, selected the , "Lion du Bal" 'as her item, which .she played carefully, and expressively. '"• A very', goqd■'number:was the':vocal. duet, 'The Singing Lesson,", sung -.by; Miss: Nellie Black and. Mr: -Herbert .Carroll., The former is also a capable violinist, and was heartily applauded for, her. playing of Sarasate's "Ziegumerweisen," E«r trick fiddling inthevitem ."Imitations/' and her-encore items. The. mandolin quartet, "Popular Airs," was" an' enjoyable ■ num-, . ber. Messrs.' H. : Carroll: (monologue "entertainer)'and Harry Spencer (comedian) supplied the spice of humour which added a zest to .the. fare." The former,, in ' his item "Harmony Hall,""was..instantly., on .good terms with his. ,while the latter, •■ after -a most amusing song en-' titled "Shifted," was "encored twice. It" may r here be:remarked l that nearly"all tfio performers were Tecall^d'for a"bis." Nor must •be forgotten ■ the'' double "Tommy Atkins" dance by. Miss Elsie'and Mr; Bert Black; which: was a.picturesque item:.
