An old resident of Petone, Mr. Samuel It..Johnson, died at tho Wellington Hospital on Saturday evening after a brief • illness. Deceased was'born in : Wellington 65 years ago, and assisted in the formation of the patent slip; at Evans Bay. . At the age of 30 he .went toPetone, where he opened,'tho first grocery store in the district. 'Deceased was a member of the old Petone Town Board, and subsequently was elected Mayor of tho first borough council,, He was' also a justice of the peace and. one of the promoters of the Petone' Building So-' ; ciety, and' a prominent member of tho Oddfellows and -'Masonio Lodges. Deceased is. survived by a widow, two sens, ■ and . two daughters. The . funeral. will . leave the Hutt Road for Taita' Cemetery' 2' o'clock to-morrow afternoon.
