AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. ' SEVERAL FINE;.PERFORMANCES. WOODGER LOWERS A RECORD. . Under most favourable weather' conditions the annual . championships under the auspices of the. Wellington Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A. were decided on the Basin Reserve on Saturday, afternoon. The attendance' was -'very, satisfactory, '■£101 being taken at the gates. Interested spectators included his-'Excellency' the Governor and party, - and- Hackenschmidt and members 'of his combination.
In -some of the events' the fields .were not, so ■ large 'as. might' have been expected, but 'competition .was,on, the' whole," very keen. One r6cord ; ; ■was'-.." broken, - the' standard was beaten infoiir other events and equalled .'in,-another;,. Especial "interest. wasmanifested in connection with the : contests in 1 ; view''of '.the- early need for the selection of a team to represent this district, at" the New Zealand championships, which take.place at Auckland this month... It ..was' to be .regretted, therefore, - that Harding was unable to be.present, as 'he would have, met foemenworthy, of his steel in. Wilton and Wilson over '; his' .favourite distances; ,440 yds. and. half-mile. ; In order that; the selection "committee may have.an opportunity of .seeing, 'whether.' ,he. can beat .these, .runners it is' probable" that he. .will be invited to take. part in the Civil Service. Sports -on the 19th. ■■■■■■.
A feature of the contests was tho showings by Woodger, the Australasian champion amateur .sprinter. In the: 100 yds. championship -he ;had . his own way :thro'ughout, .winning; 'by about three yards in lOsec. dead, which is l-ssec below the standard.. Afterwards ho put up an even better, performance by.;.lowering the New Zealand • amateur record ' for 220 yds. by.one-fifth of a.second. He-'teot ■'he. lead.■right , away from the only other starter; Hubbard, and without difficulty 'Won by. a clear . 4yds.' , It was generally thought that'the course .must'bo:short, •as Woodger slackened off'over.one' stage' °J the-journey,', and it was argued ; that Hubbard could not have traversed the .distance-m; the. time',' credited to him, but, a survey; .later,; showed . ,that" .the' measurement of, the .course 'was' ■ exact. Application willi.in- ;due course-be" made to, have the-record'recognised.: ' ■ J-nple wins were secured' by . Hubbard and EyenSon. In addition to getting 1 second, to ; lVoodger ■in the 220 yds. .cham-: pionsmp, Hubbard won the 75yds. race, long:-jump, and 300 yds. handicap.. Both walking .events .fell ;to Cashman, .who was : m-rare ' form,', although his style at. a late stage'over the mite was not, above 'Suspicion. "Dorie" Leslie started in the «P at the end of two laps. l With further training,, however, it. ,is- not improbable that -the ei-profes' '.®' o, ?a l ck ,:.may yet; justify.. his return ,to the. track.
