National Geographical Society of the United States received with acclamation, and referred to its Finance and Research Committee, a proposal by Commander Peary on behalf "of tho Peary Arctic Club, for.' an ' Antarctic expedition. - The Club offers to contribute the steamship Roosevelt (used by Peary on his last two expeditions) on condition that the Society grants 50,000 dollars (,£10,000) towards the cost of the expedition, and that both, the institutions share , the balance'of; the expenses. '• ; Commander Peary suggested that the expedition might reach the . coast of . the Antarctic Continent in March, 1911, a(; a point directly opposite Captain -Scott's, base. The American , and the British' camps would thus be' 2000 miles apart. He calculated that the Pole could be reached at-the end of - December..
