PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

. ■ .. —— <r — (Prom our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, January 29. Tlio Palmerston Guards a few . weeks back held a daylight parade, and then camped out all night on the Hokownitu rifle range,' under servico conditions—that is,-they had to improvise shelter, their only bedding being an oilskin cover and their overcoats. On that occasion the experience was thoroughly, enjoyed, and the men were anxious for another such, outing, i Yesterday evening another parade was called, and. there was. a good.muster, under. Captain JFJlurrayV The principal work-was. outpost duty, after which . *the corps received a.good drilling... As it was anticipated there. would be a visit froni the Boy Scouts, pickets were sot, but the calculations of the boys'wero completely upset by Captain M'Murray posting his men much further afield than they anticipated, witlr the result-that the-Scouts were among the lines before they, knew where they were, and the whole of them, instead of penetrating the line..'of.; theGuards, were captured. After a jolly good supper, with the Guards, the boys returned to ■ town. . It was, the intention of tho Guards this morning to'have continued their class-firing, but-'.at: one o'clock ■ a.m. their dreams were: disturbed by a shower of rain, and shortly, after it came down in torrents, and'' the ■ camp quickly broke up,, but not before everybody had got a thorough drenching. The class-firing this morning was abandoned.,. Some little feeling has .been shown over the' fact that tho Palmerston Holiday Association declined to, close at 12 noon on Wednesday/ next, which/ is the "People's at the Seilding A. and P/Show, and the result is that a large majority, of. the business people, of the town' have; announced in' the 'Standard" that they will, close their premises at noon oh that day.'■•.. _. ' The' Executive, of the Palmerston Fire Board has appointed C. Perrin as clerk of works, to superintend the erection of the. new fire: station in Cuba Street." ■ .\'.'.
