A DEAD HEAT.

4 BRITISH ELECTIONS. IRISH HOLD BALANCE. LIBERALS AND UNIONISTS EVEN. ONLY 17 SEATS TO COME. The remarkable development to-day is that the Unionists and the Liberals have reached even numbers, The state of parties, including to-day's results, now stands:— Lost. Gained. Retained. T'l. Unionist 16 ' 126 143 . 269 Liberal 117 20 249 269 Labour 14 2 36 36 Nationalist ... 1 - 77 77 Total seats returned 633 Total seats in House 670 Seats Not yet returned 17 In the last Parliament the Irish Nationalists had 83 seats. In this election they have so far lost one, and retained 77, so it is to be presumed that there aro five fairly safe Nationalist seats in the 17 not yet returned. If so, only 12 scats are left to be cut ud between Unionists, Liberals, and Labour.

Even if the Unionists secure all these twelve seats, they will only have a majority over Liberals of twelve (or eleven, excluding the Speaker), and will still be iii a minority of 26, as compared with the Liberal and the Labour parties combined (307). Starting with 163 seats in the old House, the Unionists had to gain 169, and lose none, in order to' get an absolute majority. It Is clear that they have fallen far short of this, having so far gained 126 and lost 16. When the returns are complete, they may not even be the largest single party in the House.

Of the Nationalists' present total of 77, nine are Independent Nationalists. Still, the Nationalists must Inevitably hold the balance of power in tho new House of Commons. They could decido the fato of any Government representing any combination in the House—oxcept a Liberal-Unionist combination.
