' ,',' Christchurch, January 28. : Tho, -Frozen Meat Conference : resumed sitting this morning, Mr. D.. D. Macfarlane presiding over a largo attendahco of delegates. : '■..'', ■ Tho Committee of Inquiry set up on; the previous day reported progress, and made tho following'recommendation:—. ; "(1) That the freezing , companies / be requested. to, consider whether it is-de-. sirablo to form a meat trado federation with/a view ,to; protecting their .mutual interests and : those 6f_ producers in connection, moro especially, . with such 'matters as forms of bills-' of , lading, policies of insurance, c.i.f. and e. con-., tracts, discharge, in London, , insurance'. and quality, claims, pooling, grading, ■ labour laws, and any other matters of a similar nature that may, tend ; towards the improvement-of.tho trade. "(2) That a'.'committee ho sot up by the conference to receive the replies of the freezing. companies ro federation of meat trade, to. confer with tho freezing, companies or others interested in r the: question of ; forms of bills of lading, policies of insurance, c.i.f. , and e. contracts,, and any other matter, arising out. of tho trade which may be referred to them, and that it bo an >. organisation, for tho purposes of protecting tho interests of tho producers,' and that such- committee' takes steps to. ascortain.if, the, producers of New Zealand are prepared to subscribe'.to.', a fund.to meet necessary; expenses." ■'...".- • Regarding remit No. I—that frozen'meat, should bo consigned, and sold as far/ as possible through an organisation of producers; or, a Farmers' Co-opcrativo Distributing Association;'.in order to. bring, tho producer and the consumer, into closer touch,' and- that a company should ,-bo
formed for that purpose if nccessary— ■tho committee considers that tho time is inopportune, seeing that there aro several other co-operative companies in existence, and considers that tho present facilities aro sufficient for disposing of frozen meat. ■-._..' "Regarding ' remit No. s—that it bo a recommendation to the committee to consider tho.question.of cool storage accommodation in London for tho use of NewZealand exporters of nieat-rtho committee has not sufficient information before it at present to give an opinion, on the subject of cool storage in London/' ;,Tho report was agreed to. ■ '• . . i Tho following remits were' agreed to:— . (1) That it bo a recommendation to the conference that a representative bo apSoihted to represent Now Zealand probers at the Vienna Congress; next September, with a view'to opening up Continental markets. ' ; ' ■• (2) That it bo a recommendation to the conference to inquire into,the rates and conditions of insurance against damage. (3) That it bo a recommendation to tho .freezing companies touso stronger covers. A- motion that.' steps.'■ should bo taken to regulate shipments, as far as possible, worn New Zealand to suit ' requirements and stocks held in London and afloat, was negatived. : ■' ,-";'
