A meeting of the Palmerston -North ;Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon! Messrs: E;.J. Armstrong'(chairman),- C. A. - Ewen; ,'A.' Turner, and''J.: J. Mallard. Correspondence was read from ■Inspector., Hugo, making suggestions in regard to the plans for the proposed new.; fire, station., It was decided to thank the inspector for the ./suggestions made. Superintendent Warner reported that the number of calls to fires from November 15 to date was-11;' the estimated loss of property not covered by insurance, ,£613; covered by insurance, J6790; insurance on properties .'on which fires had occurred, ..£3050;, estimated value! of' properties on 'which fires ■ had occurred, *,£5635. He had; . inspected the fire escapes at tho lodging -houses, in the town, and as his ■ suggestions had ; been : carried : oiit, he could now report the escapes as being satisfactory. He had also, inspected the back-yards of business, premises, and had had occasion to caution somo of the occupants with ; reference to the accumulations of inflammable litter; He proposed to institute proceedings. against any offenders in this respect in: the future. The report , was adopted. At v the meeting, of, the Manawahi County Council 'at Sandon yesterday, the mana-. gbr of the tram .line reported that the credit balances , lor November ; and December ,wero - iESO and ■ .£97', respectively. The principal goods carried were: Grain 26 tons, manure; 16 tons, metal and clay Gls-. yards,' timber . 212,000 feet,. wool 1646 bales. ' Passenger fares amounted -to ,£l3 lis. lOd.
