TECHNICAL EDUCATION.
THE PETONE SCHOOL. "■ A meeting of tho Petone Technical School Board was :held on. Tuesday' evening, ' the Eav. A., Thomson presiding.\The direotor of' the school, Mr.jE; King, presented his annual' reports which- stated that most of the classes had been better filled during tho year than in the previous year, whilst ono additional class had been started. The. total'number of entrahts.^in, the several classes 'was 239, as against'l3o >in 1908,' and 189 in' 1907. Tho art class was "being filled bv tho granting of a n«m]wv of free scholarships to promising pupils from the primary schools. Very successful- day olasses : for woodwork arid cookery, for primary school scholars, were also being hefd. The. number of entrants in the various classos • for the year had been—English 31, Latin and book-keeping .26, : mathematics 41, shorthand and typewriting 30, carpentry and architectural drawing 25, dress-cut-ting 17, mechanical ■ drawing 13, art 16, ' electricity 10,; plumbing 22, signwriting 8. Extraots from the reports of indi•vidtial. instrilttors were 'attached : to'~the .main report. : The report -of tho .instructor m mechtinical drawing and michine constructiin stated that one student (C. . Marsden) had passed his examination'as third engineer, whilst six had entored.for the next South Kensington examination. 'The chairman, in reviewing the report, thought students should be encoufagod to' enter for.the South Kensington• examinations,'.and for.,the city and guilds art examinations.
