'' j The tournament has advanced to such a stage that the spectators are now pick- ! ing out sectional vanners' for .'special at- ' tention;; For instance, Hendry (Hutt) and < Say well (Feildinf), who were on-top of I tbeir section, with five : wins caoh.- m'ot .1 ■yesterday at the Wellington' green,.'the I game proving; ono of the most exciting ! yet played-in/the tournament. t Hendry 1 was five down on the nineteenth head, but i on the twentieth he had the good fortune' ( to draw five, around tho jack. Saywoll 1 was unable to get amongst them; and the ,1 score stood 18 all.. On, the twentieth head the leads did not get within.two feet.-of. the jack,-and the No.' 2's-were little better. Stewart (No. 3 for Feildjng) drew ' tho shot;.-with'.'.fine judgment, which : Hollard/nullified by trailing ,tho kitty : over .to- Ilcndry's nearest side' bowl, j Stewart's second also lay a little short iii ' front. Hendry drew behind with his 'first,--and Say well, following, was .wide 1

and strong. With his last bowl, Hendry drew a beautiful shot. All now rested with Saywoll. Ho attempted to'rest 011 r his front wood, but went narrow, and left tho victory to Hendry, of the Hutt. I was an. interesting contest be- » "Veen-. Thompson (Johnsonvillo) and : Ogilvio (Manaia). On the twentieth I head tins score' was:—Johnsonville, 23; Manaia. 21. Johnsonville lay a cdnple when, the skips wont down, , which . Ogilvio : attempted to remove by driving, t -Woht wide .on both occasions, giving T 'Thompson a five-point:win. ' , . ' . As a sectional leader the gamo_ in which Look (le" Hiwi) played Bra'ckenridgo | (Newtown) in.the seventh round (Section J). was watched yesterday morning,. So close was tho scoring that both rinks were 16 points on tho twentieth . hoed. A Te Hiwi-bowl lay "the .shot t (bumped up ,by Hill),, when : the skips I went down to play the last head. • Brackonridgo got on to some front stuff . with a nftrrow ono to start with. ' Lock 1 was short with' his first. 'Then BrackeiM ridge with a fine firm shot came down, and took out-the shot ball amidst ap- , plause.- Lock's last bowl lacked the character to do any harm. Owing, to the score cards being in- ■ correctly headed, the, match between : ® U H .(Napior). and. Land (Hastings) was recorded as a. win to the-former, whereas 1 the' latter won by ono point. This matoh was in. Section C (fifth round). . In.' Section .E, Pragnell should bo credited with a loss, and Wakeman'with a. win, in the game. ii whieh .thoy-met . in-the fourth rounds The reverse , had ' been chronicled erroneously. THE OPEN DOOR.

.NEW POLICY APPROVED. INTERESTING : DISCUSSION. j The '"open-door":question was threshed .out at a largely-attended'meeting of the 1 local and , visiting jbowlers,- held' in-.the ) Wellington Bowling. Club's - pavilion'', lafet :■ 'evening; .In the past,.it has been a rule .' of the Northern; Howling' Association that i each club taking,. part inany: 'of.'the. 1 i association's:tournaments must onter '.two . ' teams: >hd no more. ,This , rule: , was •' rescinded a :few months ago,, and at, the 1 tournament , now. in; progress, the num. ( ber ; of rinks ,entered;.Dy ; individual clubs ] varies, from eleven to one. The change ) is warmly approved by some.bowlers,. and ■ just- as. warmly . condemned by . others ] Colonel R. J .'.Collins, presided at, last ' nighfs meeting.. . . 1 : Mr.;.Taskqr.(Palmerston, North) moved: j .'"That , the- open-door - policy be' adopted .at all; future' tournaments.'' Mr.; N. Bell"'(Wellington) secondod the motion.; - He. said .the;results of tho pro-: sent, tournament to. date showed that, the opon door was . not inimical to thq. coun--' ; try clubs. ': In fact, it appeared likely that a. small club might carry ' off the honours.',. ... •. . .. . An Amendment. ,• . ' Mr. . Roberts (Newtown) . . moved •an * amendment: ' . . • • '• , ; "That the . open-door, polify be , adopted;-for.'fcvery-second; year.','- . L ; Mr. J.,,P.;;THomson (Napier) seconded t the amendment. Ho .said that the open- '. ; door, policy 'every; year ..would mean tnat ! only ,the' largest, centres, . namely, Vvei- 1 lington and . 'Auckland, could .hold- ; the tournaments. The course proposed in t the amendment ;.would eiiable four places to have..the tournament in rotation: Tho 3 levy."'system',, under' 'which expenses; were ~ paid by, visiting- bowlers would obviate } tho . uiriiculties .of .holding tournaments , in ■ the Vsmaller.' ccntrds. .The objection 1 to ■ tlie open-door policy was , that it 5 caused a skip; match instead of a.club t match. He- pelieved the, preservation- of '■ 61\ib'matches,' as: proposed in.the amend- 2 ment,. would b6 'acceptable' to rail: bowl- •: • ers. \ He,' Tiad' .been. .instructed by - .his ' dlub to support it. : llr.' E.-JHill (Wellington) suggested 2 that tho'matter should bo referred .back' \ to; tlieclubs;* for 'ah expression of the j opinion.'of . the. members. ' He. thought their; opinion would be wholly.' in'■ fav- t our of . the open-door, system. .It should be decided von', the basis of the greatest 2 good for the' greatest, number.; . . Mr. H.' Bull .(Napier)" said it. would be. 2 a. waste' of i.tiiiie-to' i-efer 'the/matter, back to. tlie, clubs, as the. delegates pre- e sent- had their instructions. ' . b Mr.' Casey (Grey Lynn) said .■ the alteration. ' made had been in the best 2 interests of bowling,, as shown by the . great: number, of young bowlers who, had cornel forward.' The alteration had met with j the approval' of the majority of tho .clubs; \ ' . •' . '. •; . Not Pot-Hunters./ Mr.'. Mackintosh (Onehunga) said that 0 his olub would • not have been, repre- . v sented, here.'if .the open-door policy had not been ,in operation.. , They were .not c "pot-hunters," but they came for the. B pleasure of bowling and for sociability, t, (Hear, hear.) ■ B Mr. Keesing (Wanganui) said his. club ® was not in favour, of. the open-door polioy. This was an association of clubs, aiid each .club should , have equal representation. There was not much chance of. : a club, which sent only one team winning i the bannor against a club which sent ,1 several. (Voices: "Question." "Let 'em all come.") He 'thought the banner should only be won in a match in whioh one team : only'from each-olub should \ be allowed to compete. He supported t the amendment. i' > j The Alternative—Disruption. J Mr. .T. M. Geddes (Wellington) asked 1 why a club; like Wellington should bo restricted to two rinks, and havo 240 I members sitting on the bank looking on. On the other hand, Piharna— (applause)— had sent one strong team, and would not have been abl«'to do so. but for the opendoor policy. If they had sent two, some

• of the players would have been "pas- ; seugers," whom the others .would have i hail to carry. The open-door system '. prevailed throughout tho South Island, , where it had meant the Success of the New Zealand Bowling Association. If 1 the open-door policy was thrown out, tho . sequel would be tho disruption of the I Northern Bowling Association—(voices: 1 Nonsense)—and the' tournaments would ; be currml out by the centres. • Jlr. Pettit (Gisborne) said .he was .in- ' structed to oppose tho omin-door policy, but was prepared to support the nmend- :. went. He had betn asked to invito '. .the association to, hold -tho next tonrna--1 raent at Gisborne. (Hear, hear.) If . the ' amendment was adopted, there would be no danger of disruption, and it would be in-the best interests of the game. . ] South Island Experience. .Mr. .Nash (Paliu«rston.North) supp'ort- - ed the open-door policy. Ho pointed out J that the Wellington Club; for instance, -. would not •be so strong in competition whfen it entered tea'rinks as when the number was smaller. He had watched a tournament at Christchurch, and had been convinced by whnt ho saw that the' open-door policy -would have ' to bo adiyitod by the N.B.A. He thought the time bad arrived for holding the tournament alternately at Auoklhnd and Wellington, and making a fairly heavy levy on visiting bowlers for expenses.; ' r Mr. W. I'ryor (Wellington); supported the' open-door policy as a means of encouraging young players, and said it accounted for the growing success of ;the tournaments -in the South ,Island.' He hoped nobody would carry away the idea that there was any town versus country 1 feeling in. thio matter. The open-door policy was as advantageous to tho country, as to the city clubs. . ■ Mr. ■F. W. Brunskill (Wellington) also gave reasons in favour of tho open-door svstem. 1 ; - 1 ' Mr. White (Hastings): said that if - tho open-door, policy \ was to be carried out every year the'• champion fours could not go oni He 'supported tho amendment.. . . Motion Carried. , ' .On . a show of ; hands, being taken, the motion was carried: by a large majority. A .vote was then .taken: on-the'basis of one club one - vote. The result was 28 for. open-door policy, and 15 against. . The chairman explained that-the resolutions had no effective force, but iwere merely recommendations.. ; A: resolution in ! favour of .'holding the liext tournament at Auckland .was also carried. , ; : ' Votes of 'thanks to the officials .of the tournament, and the ohairmaii of • the ■meeting, were-.carried by acclamation.
