Jndgment was given this morning in the ap--1 (f c?Jv" t' against fines imposed by the SM. for having opium m their possebiion Mr. Justice Edwards upheld the appeals on y ,the grounds that the Opium lAct of l§oß, which 'swept away all previous enactments on tho ' subject of opium, is defective, and that it permits as a good defenco the plea that the opium lound m the powession of a person had been imported or purchased by him prior to August 4, 1908, whw the consolidatedlerisla.could not have been imported or purchased in tontravontion of tho provisions of that Act.
