The police evidence was to the effect that a mile had been marked off on tho North Itoad, and a sergeant and constable had/kept stop watches on tho motorists. The magistrate jald that, allowing ample margin for error there was still complete evidence to justify him in saying that the speed was dangerous. He was strongly of opinion that the matter had got to such a point in Christchurch that, judging by v wnat one saw, the motor-care were frequently a menace to the publio in the public thoronghfarts. There were drrvere who woro thoughtful of the safety of the public,, but there w a3 a largo section who wore >not. "I'm going to Bt °P J 1 or mako it an expensive amusement," added the magistrate,. "and if these fines are not sufficient I will increase them." Defendants lv-ero each fined £3, and costs.
