The Cooper's of Wellington. The firm of F. Cooper, Ltd., Seed Merchants and Growers, is ono of tho oldest in Wellington—indeed ono of the oldest and best known in tho Dominion. Ihe business was commenced in a small way in 1860—practically half a century ago. Ine old adage "Large Oak from Little Acorns grow" is particularly appropriate in this case. From a very small beginning in those days the present large business has steadily grown until now it is one of tho most extensive m Australasia. The name of Cooper's in connection with seeds in New Zealand - is more than the proverbia.l household word, Tho firm was among the first to recognise the suit-ability of our climate for producing seeds. Their extensive trials conducted annually for years past, in which seeds from various parts of the world are sown side by side, have proved to them that locally grown seeds are stronger in growth than imported. There are many seeds, such as onion and parsnip, which lose the geimination in crossing the equator. Their seeds, being grown under their own supervision from rigidly selected pedigree stocks, have won the confidence of thousands of buyers. The firm now handles quantities of seeds that seem quite startling to anyone not in the trade. For metance, tho sales last year included such quantum!! as two tons of onion seed, five tons of mangel seed, of one variety of carrot seed alone (specially selected stock for denying farmers)' one and a half tons wore sold. The popularity of the beautimodern giant flowering sweet peas may be gauged by the quantity used, whioh is Marly half a ton. The business is by no means confined to this country. The firm has this year under crop 500 acres m garden peas alone, all exclusively for seed purposes. These and othei seeds also are laigely exported to Australia, Europe, and America. This large aiea is directly under their own control and supervision. The firm handles seeds of all kinds, and also makes a speciality of everything in seeds for birJs and animah Cooper's seeds may be obtained in packets in practically every town and village in New Zealand These packets are put up in immense quantities by special seed-fillmg machines. Tho total cost of the land and building is about £20,000. A party of visiting seed merchants from Australia lasi week, who Tvent over the premises, described them as being tho most complete and best equipped in Austialnsia. A special feature of the promises new to the Dominion is the garden roof, which TV ill be stocked with some beautiful specimen palms and also flowering plants, so that a unique display may ba made all tho year round which could not be done in an ordinary shop window. The roof is reached by a passenger elevator from the main hall in Mercer Street. The proprietors inute inspection during Xmas week. ! * ■iimihii ,1,1,!, durability.
