Gilbert's and Mr. Edward German's opera "Fallen Fairies " has been successfully produced at the Savoy Theatre. Mr. Claudo Fleming was the piincipal baritone. THE .GILBERT-GERMAN COMBINATION; Sir. William Schwenck Gilbert is tlio famous wit who collaborate! so brilliantly with the late bu Arthur Sullnan in a seues of coiuic operas that are in a class by themselves. •'■ Ho is also luiown to fame as tho author of the "Bab Ballads." Sir William was knighted 111 1907. Mr. Edward German, who has written the music of "The Fallen Fairies," is best known in tho Dominion through his ballads,:-which are particularly melodious He was born at Whitchurcli, Shropshire,'in 1862, was educatoti at! Chester,' and alter.seven years at the Royal' Academy of Music, become a sub-professor of tho violm and a conductoi. OJ late years he has restricted himself to composition. He wrote, incidental music to Irving's production of "Henry -VlII," and also to "Romeo and Jiiliot,". "Richard III," "Aβ You Like It," "Tho Tempest," "Much. Ado About Nothing, , ' "English Noll," and "The Conqueror." His biggest operatic success was "Tom' Jones," produced at the Apollo Theatre in 1907, and se'cuied for Australasio by Messrs. Clarke and Moyncll. :Ho also finished "The Emerald Islo" for Sir Arthur Sullivan, and,wrote tho music of "Merrie England," and "A Princess of Kensington." Mr. German has recently collaborated with Kipling in publishing the "Just So Song Book."
