THE STATE COAL MINE.
Sir,—As regards the ,dispute at the State coal mine, the men are perfectly right ill the stand they are taking about the reduction of the hewago rote. , No companyin this Dominion should ask the men either...to reduce their hewago rates or to truck their own coal. Surely it is as well to pay the men a fair wago, for their honest toil,' seeing that the living and up-keep of the. men ' s w °rth considering, as vrell as the State's reception of tho whole of the profit. The best plan would lx> for. the Stata to go into tho Geological Departaient and make a large reduction of the salaries .of a few of the officers there receiving- from -i'oOG to <£1000 a year. This would be better than taking 3d. a'ton away from miners who have to work very much harder than some of those gentlemen.—l am, etc., * A MINING EXPERT.
