':; A SHAREBROKER'S AFFAIRS. _'. Auckland, December 10. ' James Scott, Lennox,, sharebroker (son of Mr. J. ,11. Lennox), was examined in connection with his father's bankruptcy to-day.- He explained that he got his father to allow him to carry on business in his name,. his father to guarantee liabilities.'. He estimated that he lost ,£SOOO or .60000 through defalcations by a clerk, X3OOO on share transactions for a Melbourne client,.and..£3ooo on book debts, besides which bank interest, had run 1 into something like JBISOO. The business was his own.'not his father's.. He denied legal liability:to both the bank and his father, saying':that, the latter had forgiven him the debt. .'.. Ho' admitted, , however, that he had 1 a moral liability to his 'father, and ho hoped to repay him in tho ond. DROWNED IN THE WANGANUI RIVER. 1 . Wanganui, December'lo. ■•' : Edward Hackett, an. old resident of-AVanga-nui, and at one time a well-known oarsman,' was drowned in 'the "river, at. midnight on Thursday. ' He had been working at-Parapara, and when coming home called at the house of Mr. Fred. Allan, on .the river-bank, in order to borrow, .a boat to, cross, the .river, and so save a w:alk of two and a half miles.
