NOTES ON THE RACING.; : (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent) ... Woodville, December' 8.Speculation was limited in the Maiden Hack 1 Handicap, and what there was of it was confined to Celaeno'and Sir' Solo.. At the start, which was a splendid one, Celaeno went to the front from Sir Solo, with the rest bunched except Moondino,'who jnmned.back when the Barrier rose. With threo lurlongs to. go, the two leaders were being, challenged by Invcran and Sleccombe; .At tho turn, Celaeno ;was done with, and young Reid,'who had riddena very nice, patient race, slipped up on , the rails and, in a good finish,-.won by a\length. Sleecombo was. just in advance of Puiewai, who. finished very.fast. ■'. ' '._' '*, Feu de; Joie was made favourite in the Hurdles, andjshejjhad the race won-at any stage. She outjn'mpe'd the field, and, in addition, had plenty of', pace 'to 'spare.'.; At the start,' Erl King led from'Waipunehu, but at the.second fence the favourite ran' into second placed At the six furlong post Silken Rein wont out with a dash, but in a furlong Pen 1 de Joie had caught her, and, going on, the favourite won easily by half a dozen lengths. Whimper was a length behind' Silken. Eein,. and Main was next. ■..'>

Te Puia, who won a double at Dannevirkei was always first choice with backers in. the Grandstand Handicap, the others to; receive solid support being-bhannon Lass and Milan; The latter got knocked about a good deal in tho race and finished fourth. At the end of a furlong No Trumps was showing the'way, followed by Toanga and Te Puia. Across the bottom bend Shannon' Lass and Llanwevn were prominent. At the distance Te Puia and Shannon Lass left the field, and in a hard finish the Hawera maro won by a head. ' . . Tho Woodville Handicap was ,-a keen race, and the: first . and second horses 'were both ridden splendid races. Yasa and Moloch delayed the dispatch, and Hatch was fined by the starter. When the tapes went up, Moloch and Paisano were the first to show, out, but they were steadied, and'Mataari. took the lead. At the six furlong post he .was two lengths clear of Moloch, with Berengaria and, Paisano next, and Vasalast. At the home turn Mataari was in difficulties, and Buchanan then brought Paisano up to challenge Moloch. In a very hard, finish, in which both horsemen excelled, the judge declared for Moloch by a short head. Vasa was the last to pass the post. The Hastings-owned mount, May Flower, who had put up a record gallop in the morning, and whoso connections' deemed it advisable to put up lib. overweight to secure the services of the crack horseman, A. was made a warm favourite in the Flying Hack Handicap. Towards tho close of operations tho ringmen Tefused to write her name. Sea Queen got off first, and tho favourite was next, while tho Trenthain-owned First Battery, was left. With half a mile gone, Sea Queen gave way to Amaru, who got a, break on the field.-,, Tho favourite was boing ridden in most confident manner, and in the straight she ran away from everything. '.'lt "was a good race for second money. . First' Battery, after being badly loft, finished close up'fourth, v,^ The- Borough was regarded, as very open, and the public selected Aberration and Lamsdorff: in that order. At tho start Aboriginal and Aberration ledV from Lamsdorff, with Waipunui,and- Sandix in the rear. 1 Aberration ■ was. done; with : at tho home bend, and Lauisdprff wont on and won by half. a longth,'after a good sot T to : with : Waipunui. Aboriginal was woll .clear, of' Aberration. This was Waipunui'a .ninth time forsecond monoy without a win intervening. The Singers was .made a, hot,, favourite in the Welter Handicap, and-he won comfortably after being badly placed in the middlo part of the race.. There was'a great'finish between several, others 'for. second -money, which went

to Chaso Mab who beat Rangikura by a head. Polynices was close up fourth.. . . ■ ;- Another exciting finish took placo in _tho Electric Handicap. After an even dispatch, Naumai : showed clear of St; Bill and Kilwdim. At tho turn Kilihdini tried.to get, up .on the rails and, after a, scrimmage, secured tho lead. Sir Antrim came very fast from the ruck, and appeared to win, but the judgo showed no hesitation in hoisting Kilindini's number, and gave tho official verdict as a bare head. Messrs J. and S. Whitworth, who havo been in Australia for several mouths, returned to Wellington by the Marama yesterday. Among the winners at the Mooneo Valley. Races (Vic.) on December 1, were the two Now Zealand-bred horses - Waihuku (San Fran -Üb) and Idyll (Multiform—Bellicent). ,■.... Tho ox-New Zealand jockey, L. H.
