ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

'/V :;" ' iA trap accidont occurred in ::Majbribank3 Sheet soon after G o'clock last evening. - Mr. Frank Sinclair, of'Majoribanka-Street, was leading his horse, which was drawing" a light' trap, when tho animal plunged and reared and then galloped down the street. Mr. Sinclair hung on as, long as possible, leaving go as the horse swung on to' the footpath, where ono ;wheel caught on a telegraph pole. The stop'and the side of the trap were smashed and tho axle bent, whilst the maddened horse, breaking away, galloped down the street, and. rounding the City. Hotel corner dashed along Victoria Street, Jervois Quay, and made down Johnston and Featherston Streets to' the railway station, where it was'diverted.to Lambton Quay. . Quite maddened . by this time,: it charged up tho Quay, and was only brought to a standstill by crashing:into a tramway pole opposite the Hotel Arcadia.; The. horse was badly injured and was -being • led along Victoria Street in a shattered condition when it broke: down altogether. Mr, Quinnell, the veterinary surgeon who . was called, ; stated that it was suffering from displacement of the hip and internal hemorrhage, and should be shot. A rifle" was then and there procured, and the horse was put out of its misery. ■•• Tho animal was a fine hack, only five years old, and had only been in Mr. Sinclair's possession a few.weeks. ..,;!... :..'-..
EYE PIEECED BY A. PIPE-STEM. An inquest .was held to-day touching the death of a man named Herbert Jolly, a Tasmaniaa, who succumbed to injuries 'Sustained by a pipe-stem which entered his right eye to a depth of 2J inches, and which was not extracted until twelve hours afterwards. The evidence went to show that: the accident happened during, a'scuffle, and the remarkable thing about the affair was that, the deceased was unaware that the portion of the pipe had entered his eye until it was extracted by the doctor. The jury returned a verdict that death resulted from an abscess on the brain, caused by the pipe-stem, there , not being sufficient evidenco to. provo how the accident occurred.
