Professor T.-A. Hunter, of the Victoria College staff, who has been to Sydney as delegate from tho New Zealand Tennis Association, returned yesterday by tho Marama. Another passenger was'Mif. Anthony "Wilding, who. with Mr. N. E. Brooke, won for Australasia the recent Davis Cup contest. At 'the meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board on Tuesday,'the chairman (the Hon. E. Mitchelson) announced that after the next meeting on December 2i ho proposed to resign his seat on tho board. "I have," he said, "been ohainnan now for very nearly five years, and I want a rest. T do not want to take members by surprise. I only', want to notify them that tho next meeting will bo my last." Mr. D. A. Aberorombie, manager of the Queensland Insurance Company, «a 9 a passenger by the Victoria, which left Lyttclton last night for Wellington. Inspector Ellison returned to Wellington yosterday from Nelson, whero he has been on a visit of inspection, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Irard returned by the Marama yesterday, after a bine months trip to England and America. Their bod, Keith, who has been studying at Cambridge, and has »lso distinguished himself as a croquet player, returned with them. On Saturday afternoon the teachers of tho Bullor district who havo been attending the ironwork classes at tho Technical Soh'ool made a presentation to Mr. 0 f a handsome_ portemonnnie, as, a marlt 6f their appreciation of the manner in which he had conducted i the classes. The 'presentation was accompanied with a neat.speech eulogistic of Mr. TomkicsV good services, td which Mr. Tomkies suitably responded. ' ' ' Mrs. Grainger, wife of Captain Grainger, marine surveyor to the P, and O. Company, and Miss j Grainger, arrived from Sydney by the Marama yesterday, and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hannah, of Boulcott Street. Captain Grainger 1 will not arrive in New Zealand until April next. Mr. J. Wheeler, of Wadostown, formerly town clerk of Petone, and clerk of tho Pohanginrt County Council, haa been appointed clerk to the Johnsonviile Town Board.
Mr. Monzies Gibb, the Christdhnrch artist, intends leaving for England in March, next to study in England and on the Continent for u couple of years. Mr. J. H.i yon Haast, brother of Mr. H. F. Ton Haast, of this city,' who has been in Burma and Canada for the last two years, armed from Sydney by the Marama yesterday. In Canada he resided at first in Vermilion s »nd later at Edmon&ton, where ho was jsecrc.ary of tho local Golf Club. Mr. Eobt. H. Wood, Wellington manager for Messrs. Kempthdrnc, Grosser, and Co., arrived back yesterday from a trip to 'Australia. The Rev, J. Moore Eitchie, of Wellington, has returned to Wellington from a visit to England and America. 'Whilst " abroad he > visited Newfoundland, and at St. John's preached in the church in which he was bap- ! tised.
Mr. Richard Tmgey, of tho firm of K, and hi 1 ? nA hia brotljer. Mr. Albert Tlngcy, of Ealmerston Jiorth, arrived back from a tour round the world yesterday. Tho trip was thoroughly enjoyed. Mr. Edward Saunders, of tho staff of tho "Lyttclton Times," who went to England to assist Lieut, (now Sir Ernest) Shackieton in the'compilation of his book on his recent expedition to the South Polo, arrived back by the Marama yesterday. Mr. Saunders says that Captain Scott, who is organising another South l'olar expedition for nett year, 'will _ probably be accompanied by some ot tho mombcis ot the Shackieton expedition. It is understood'(says our Feilding correspondent) that Mr. C. A. J. Levett, of Kiwitca, will he nominated for the position of president of the Manawato A. and V. Association for next year. Dr. Deamer, late of Featherston, and Mrs. Deamer, who went across to Sydney a few weeks ago to settle, but found the climate uncongenial, icturned to Wellington by tho ,Marama yesterday. ' Among the passengers to arrive from Sydney yesterday by tho Mamma was the Very Ke\. Father Murray, of tho Redemptonst Order, who succeeds tbe Eov. Father Clune as Superior for the Wellington' district. Ho was accompanied by the Rev. Fathers O'Farroll • and Bannon, of hjdncy, who are paying a < jiiit to New Zcalannd, Tho Rev. Father Clune is to leave for Australia by the Manuka to-morrow evening. The death,occurred on Tuesday of Mrs Dalrymple, wile of Mr J. Q. W. Dalrymple, of laimow Road, Kelburne. The deceased lady, who was a daughter of Lieutenant Huysmans, R.N., was only 37 yoars of age. Mr. A., B. nislop, secretary of the Institute of Marine Lngincers, K returning from Duncdin by the Mararoa this morning. Mr. W. Dovemsh ,'Meares, of the Alliance Assurance Company Christchurch, armca from Lyttelton by tho Victoria this morning, and goes on to Napier this evening. Mr. R. Manning, secretary of the New Zealand Miner 9 Federation, leaves for Auckland by tho Main Trunk express to-day. Mr and Mrs. K. 'c. Broun, of Wellington, who have been on a tiin to England, returned I by the Marama yesterday.
