THE CAUCUS.
:AN AUCKLAND OPINION. (By Telejraph —Smcial Correspondent.) \ Auckland, December 8.. In reference to the Government caucus the "Herald" this morning says: As was con-' fidontly expected by those who are votsed in the ways, "f politicians ; the- Prime Minister has reduced his leasehold supporters to seriousness by threatening to go to the country upon the question of land tenure. Had ho.done:so the' veriest tryo knew that very fow leaseholders would return to the house, and tkat a clean sweep would have- been made by a strong freehold Parliament of the leasehold areas left- untouched by Sir_ Joseph Ward. The fear of a dissolution was indeed "a hangman's whip" to keep the malcontents in order, although for some reasons it is , regrettable that they did not defy consequences and make a-stand for what they have, been pleased to, term their."principles.", -.-,-; . -.-:
