. FIRE BRIGADE .MATTERS. They complained ot the. time lost by the brigade in- reaching'i the scene of a: fire under, present,.conditions.:" Artditioiial five plugs in certain localities wero asked for,-,and it was pointed out that the iire■bell ht. the fire station at'Brobklyn was, 60' placed that. adjacent buildings obstructed the sound. It was therefore requested' that it: should bo hung on posts near the station. The at the fire" station "was represented as inadequate for the present.popuulation, and it was contended that, a horse reel had become a necessity., I ', Facilities for giving,, su quicker alarm from some parts' of' thb suburb' were required. There should be alarms at' Washington Avenue*. Box Hill,, Ohiro Road, and the higher levels at Ktchctf Town. : Thcso should communicate with the; station. and set the- bell 'ringing : automatically; It .was- also. desirable to have a hydrant and'hose placed' in boxes in different, parts of the district. . The, chairman (Mr. T. 'Ballinger) said ■■.• the council had already ordered material for new fire alarms for Brooldyji and other places. : The' council spent .fSOGO on ~flre •■: prevention ' last year, and had. the same amount on the estimates this year. .Brooklyn was a very difficult problem, and, he was not sure that a horsewould be the best thing for the locality;' • A member of tho deputation:-We didn't like to ask for a motor. ...(Laughter.). .-.-.■ The chairman: "No, I;suppose not." Continuing, Councillor . Ballinger said' ho was not sure about the practicability of all that.'vras proposed in the matter of alarms.
