After winning the first' set M'Nicol ivas inclined •to underestimate his opponent's worth/ and, aS'a result,'he f was iuiabfa'.to.hold him in the final sot, whioh.Cleghorn won,/ Weir -was';-indisposed,'-and defaulted to' Ward. Taylor and. Duncan played a vigorous game in the double -against J. M'Lean and Clarke, and won a three-set match.
The Victoria College ladies defeated the Wellington ladies by 17 sets to 1. Miss Webb, of the Wellington team, gave Miss Eoberts a good-game, losing by one game in each set. The Thorndon men scored an easy win against Newtown, \ only losing tho fifth and sixth singles. But six out of the nine rubbers ran into three sets, and in tho last two doubles, which ran into three sets, the deciding sets woro. won by Thorndon at 6—5. Jeffery and Lewis won their singles against Putnam and Cacheinaille. The Thorndon ladies won their match by 4 rubbers to .3 rubbers, but Newtown won ; tho . majority of games. ' . In the pennant matches Newtown B put up a good stand against Ivilbirnie. ; Emeny and N. Mitchell did well in defeating H. Mitchell and De Hose in tho singles and the double. Martin, Drummond, and Miss Asquith played well 'for .tho Ivilbirnie team. There was a close finish' between, the Petone and Victoria College B teams. The good play of tho Petone ladieswon .their team' the match. Tho Brougham. Hill team was too strong for the College A team, Miss M'Kellar' being the only ono-of the losers to win a set. 1 Some, exciting finishes ,-wero. seen in the ladies' sets ,in the Newtown ' A v;- Muritai match. Miss Smith led Miss Veitch 6—l, and then : the'latter evened, but was beaten .7—6. In tho other ladies' single, Miss'Plimmer led Miss M'Lean s—l, but lost the next six. games and match. Only , one match was played in the racket grade, and that was won by Trinity A, who defeated. Oriental by G sets to 3.- Robinson played well for tho losers, and having a nice style; he will undoubtedly benefit by these in-ter-club matches. ' : " • The, Wellington .
