At the Suprome Couit, Richard John Yeoman,' '< who was found guilty on two charges of criminal • assault, pleaded, guilty to two other * ohnrges out ot seven pending. The Crown , ' Prosecutor proposes to recommend a nolli prosequi in respect to'the remaining coses, and his Honour agreed to defer ( sentence till Fnday., Waller Clnes, t alias William Bailey, and Joseph Phillips, alias James Murphy, pleaded' not guilty to a charge that on August 30, at ' Otahuhu, they did assault James Clarke, doing him actual bodily harm. The jury returned a i vordict of guilty against both' prisoners of u joint' assault, and they wcre J sentonccd to a month's imprisonment each. 1 William Preston, for-theft of £2 from the dwelling of Josephine Hoi rod was sentenced , j to twelve mohths' imprisonment, with hard labour. Isabel Smclaire, -charged with concealment of birth, was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, the Door of Hope authorities undertaking to take care of her. _ James'Geddis, found guilty of robbing Eveliria Morris, a visitor fiont Fiji, of jo» cilery and money, and of having assaulted her, ro • ceived a'sentence of seven years' hard labour. Harold Poss Anderson, who pleaded guilty to three charges of .false pretences, was sentenced to six months' impiisonment. ' \' - ' November 23. Tho 'girl Isabel Smclaire pleaded guilty to concealing the birth oMier child. Mr.'Justice Cooper said he would deal with tho cose as he did. with that of Olive Yates. He did not wish, the impression to bo formed thatiho considered the offenoo a mfiior one, but when ' young girls lapsed m-'fhis v,ay through inexperience, and sometimes through locking moral training, the best course was that calculated to 6ave them in the future. Tho girl was committed -to the Door of Hopo for eighteen months. 1 , Dunedin, November 22 1 At tho Supremo Court to-day, John William Chadwick,' who pleaded guilty in tho Lower Court to two charges of forgery, was sentenced 1 to twelve months' imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent, and to commence at the expiry of a sentence which prisoner is now undergoing. William Brookes, alim Jackson, was found guilty of acting upon | a cheque, knowing it to havo 'been forged. Sentence was deferred. A dhargo'of sheep-steal-1 ing, which was Win. Johnson | Rae, was not finished when the Court rose. ' November 23. i Edward Burgess, Edward Pyle and John I Hoaley were onarged with having on August 24 robbed James Andrew M'Lean of JBI7 25., I and with having used personal violence towards him. There wets other counts, charging accused with stealing money, assault with intent to rob, and assault. Owing to McLean not putting in an appearance, it was decided that , tho caso should stand over till next sittings. . Wm. Bjpoks, found guilty yesterday on a charge of aoting on a ohequo, knowing it to havo .been forged, and, who pleaded guilty to », charge of obtaining money by'false pro- 1 tenoes, was sentenced to 12 months on each ohargo, the sentences to run concurrently. Wil- _ i ,liain Johnston Rao was acquitted oh a oharge «, ,of sheep stealing. 'A youth named Answorth 1 Livingston v Perry pleaded guilty to two charges of theft from dwellings and receiving. In regard to the thefts. t ovidence as to character- was proffered to the- Court in support of an application for probation. Tho judge asked if acoused had revealed tho name of the person from whom he had received the »rticles ,mentidned in the third chargo, Tho police replied'that he had made a statement which was not regarded as satisfactory. The Judge refused probation, and sentenced prisoner to six months' imprisonment. i
