LAWN TENNIS.

BROOKES DEFEATED BY WILDING. (By Tolegraph.-Prosii Assoeiatlon.-Oopyriiht.)' (Eec. November H, 5.5 p.m.) ' Melbourne, November 13. At the Victorian lawn tennis championship meeting, in the singles championship the New Zeala'ndcr, Wilding, after losing two sets to Brookes (Victoria), captured the third and the remaining two, thus - pulling off the match against his formidable opponent. The sets resulted r—2—G, Z-$, 8-3, 6-3, 9—7. In the championship doubles, Brookes and Wilding beat Rico and Campbell (New South ,Walcs), 6-2, 6-l>6-4. 'Sydney, November 13. The United States representatives for tho Davis Cup ' contest, ' M'Langhlin and' Long, are having hard and sustained practice. They havo demonstrated that they are capable of great possibilities, and aro getting into excellent form. ' WILDING'S WIN.. - ~, Last year when Wright and Alexander came from the United States to > play. "Australia with New.Zealand"'for the Davis Cup, the visitors played at the Viotorian meeting, and so ;gave a lino to their form. This year the two young. who comewrapped in the ''Stari Spangled Banner," have kept away from the Viotorian tournament, and are 'preparing solidly in private, which fact no doubt heightens: the interest in the main contest, though sit is hard to imagine anything more exciting than the finish last year, when Brookes and Wilding •'both fell viotims in • the singles to Wright, and the Davis Cup would have been lost to Australasia had not Wilding won in the fifth and'final match with Alexander. ' Though Brookes was recently declared to be not at his best, Wilding must be in ' great form to beat Mm. 'The brief, cabled figures indicate that it .was a great contest, and.that Wilding, having ,lost, the first two 6ets by substantial margins,, must have'fought with; rare ( determination'and staying power. Though Dnnlop and Sharp are among the four nominees for the Davis Cud contest, tho recent success of Brookes and Wilding us a double suggests that Australasia's: defenders will be the same pair/as last year.;.,',.
