■ First Gnu' was the early favourite; in the Ladies' Purse, but late money .came Ifor- Mont, real and Shillolagh, ; and ,the Auckland horse receded. Inchbonny led at a good pace, and First Gun.whipped in the field. At the distance Montreal ran up to the leader, and in a good finish won by: a length. Farley Grove was four lengths behind Inchbonny. The betting was spirited in .'the Stewards' J Handicap, and the result was a , complete surprise to all concernod. The field were sent off without any delay, and North Bast was the first ■ : to move. He was immediatoiy supplanted ■by . Federal,; but, in.'a .chain, Gold Lace had gono to the'front,'followed by Penates and North ■ East. The two last-named were, chopped/mt, and retired, leaving Gold Lace with a three lengths lead. Just before, the home turn was negotiated, a smash occurred, in which North-East : was sent right over the rails, and Day Beam and Sweet Angelus nlso came' down. Day Beam broke his leg, and had. to be destroyed, r but ■Sweet Angelus and .North East were apparently uninjured, Penates gotout of the rncfc in the straight, but could not overhaul Gold Lace, who won by a , couple of lengths. Truganini beat Ilarita by a neck; A special meeting of the stewards is to be held at noon on Monday tp inquire into the cause of the accident. - Alexis was the favourite in the Shorts Handicap, .with Cerise and Blue next in demand. By this time heavy rain had come on, and,, at the ■ post, the horses were quite indistinguishable. Cerise and Blue was first into the .straight, bnt The Seer always had his measure, and.won comfortably at the finish'. l ■ *

HOW LADY LUCY GOT IN FRONT. « ' V ; THE JOCKEY'S STORY. . . (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) ' Christchurch, November 6. "Bob" Young, who rode the winner in the' Cup, is just-.out of his, apprenticeship, which was served under the Fordoll trainer, i'..Tilley. He is eighteen years of age, and his been in the Fordell stable since hi) was thirteen. He is a bright, intelligent youth, tmd is a younger brother of the well-known Foilding horseman of'the same name. He was much in demand to-day after his win, and it was some timo before an interview could be obtained' with him. The ladies e>pccially made much of the midget—he is barely G, stone-rand the photographers also besieged him. When ifound by the- Dominion representative, he , was preparing for the Stewards' Handicap, in which ho >odo Ormolu. In the course of, . conversation he said:—'"l left.the barrier but pulled her in behind, and was at the back of tho main ■bunch with only two horses, behind, me .when the stand was passed. Across the top we'were ,not interfered with', and' had a good passage on the Tails while passing some of the horses .at.tho .-mile.;. Sho was going ■beautifully., and, without any effort, started passing the field at-;the-half-mile';. . I was a bit: anxious, and, gave her a kick-up in'the straight; She iras .then about fifth, but when the iaare saw. the leaders she went after them' on her owni and'then I. knew that I would just about catch what was .in front of me. The cheersj of the crowd were very distinct, and you can ba quite sure that the mare tried hard for me. With about fifty yards to. go we caught Roosevelt, and I laughed at Price, who thought-he had,-the,race.woni; Yes, I'm proud that, J won,-but,-my. word, it hard. I "nearly -.fell when carrying the saddle to .the weighing machine,'isir stiff were my legs from kicking .her along. She is a lazy mare to ride, but, wneh warmed up, is a great finisher. • J-I ; ; can't complain now about my bad luck last year, when Downfall just' heat my' mount,- Heorthen, in the last stride. I did hot get any presents except, from the owner, and his present is always a good one when , you win." : HOW THE FAVOURITE WAS BEATEN. ■ . TOLD BY, HIS RIDER. After the race L. Wilson, rider of the favourite, Bobrikoft,- said, when interviewed no excuse unless it . was .. the . .slippery, going.. Everybody thinks I 'hauled him about; too miicn, but at no time was he galloping kindly,' .and I was afraid he ivould knock himself out if I let him go. He was climbing badly, all, the time, and tho ground seemed to give , away! under him at tho_ five-furlong, post. It was necessary to give, him, a cut with the stick, and when I did he nearly fell down. Then I got hold of his head and tried him that'way, but it was no'good, as. he jvas : gone. He can't • stay, and that is the plain truth of the matter. Despite the sensational track-work I was never confident about him, and after, going six furlongs to-day it was all up,with him." , ON THE RACING. , {13j Telcjjraph—Special Corrcsbondent.' •. Christchurch, November 6. In the opening event'Slaney,'..who had galloped a mile in lmin. 42see., was made first choice, and '.he, -led . throughout. He gave' a much improved exhibition of jumping, andwon comfortably frorii Xavier, who tired badly at the finish.,' Southern -Cross was a poor third. :. ' It was raiding.'heavily when the Maiden. Race was run, and ,the- public preferred .to stop under cover instead of speculating. There was no delay at the start, and quickly Ambala shot to the front', but, at the business end of •• the journey, Taskmaster took the lead , and won comfortably, by several lengths from Tawhaki. Both the winner and second horse are engaged in tile Derby on Monday. The Riecarton Welter Was a splendid race throughout. At the start Miss-Mischief led from Kilwinning and Aberbrothock. Th6'latter was-steadied, and fell back, and Babchick joined the leaders. Kilwinning led into the straight, and Elysian . then challenged,- ' but fell away/hgain at the distance. King Post then came very fa6t from-the rear, but failed to get nearer than • second. Miss Mischief .was a good third, and Aberbrothock was fourth. .Diabolo got badly away, and was in the rear the whole way. " . .: There was heavy yagering on Bobrikoff and Downfall in tho New Zealand Cup, and, with the ..exception of 'Erim, who. was a rank outsltjer, the- whole of the candidates were well backed. When parading in the birdcage,' nothing looked hotter than AU Red, Downfall, and Lady Lucy. The contestants all moved well in the preliminary, especially , Downfall,. who wanted to bolt. No delay'took place at the barrier/and, with the exception of Lawn-Rose, who was left,' the field went off to a good start.' ' The : different stages- of the race were very interesting, first one and. then another appearing to hold winning chances, but Lady Lucy, with .her' lightweight, proved the best' stayer' of the field, and came with a great finish in the last hundred yards, and won a good race from Roosevelt and Sir Prize. Lady Lucv is the second New Zealand Cup winner that F. Tilley has turned out in the last three years. She ! is a half-sister to : Heorthen; who was just' beaten by Downfall in last year's race and to Fulmen, a previous Cup winner. She cannot bo traced-to a Bruce Lowe family, but she comes from' a sound tribe; and ' there is ' very, little doubt that she belongs to the figure system. Her pedigree i;eads as follows: —By Seaton Dclaval (4), from Hilda by Mns--ket (3), from Ouida'by Yattendon 17, from Gulnare by Little John (4), from Gulnaro by Gohanna 17, from Deception by' Theorem' (1) from the imported mare Cutty . Sarlc, whoso pedigree was lost. Cutty Sark is ancestress of The Barb, Artillery, Sweet Marie, Strathmore,.. Antares, Sweet Nell, etc. • The result' of the race again proves what a hard task tho top weights' have in the New Zealand Cnp, as the' three' placed horses were all from the under. Bst. division R Young, who .rode . Lady Lucy, had tho mount : on Heorthen, who ran second last vear, and 11. Prico, who avrs ; on the second fiorse this year, rode Star Rose to victory in 190 G. ' . All the acceptors started 'in the Welcome Stakes. Sunburnt was ,the best-backed, but hp did not leave the barrier as smartly as the ■ others. Formby and Kohiiioor wore first into : thp. straight and then came' Sunburnt on the ' rails. Tho last-named, got. squeezed in and • had to tall back.' The field were bunched at : the, distance, and' Madam •• Madcap then shot ' nut. However,. she succumbed to a fast run : by Danube, "wno .won-by a'neck. : J
